What's the deal with the sweat band on the clutch and brake reservoir? Is it functional or cosmetic or both?

HRC and Joey Dunlop started using them to keep brake fluid from getting every where. He would use the brakes so hard at the TT that he would boil the brake fluid and I would start to leak out of the top of the res, and cover him and the bike with hot brake fluid. To combat this they started putting sweat bands around them to soak up the fluid.

Dual purpose: The leak protector, and for UV. Some say for the fluid UV protection (UV might make you have to change the fluid more often), others say the UV rays will affect the container more than the fluid and cause the container to discolor where you can't easily see the fluid levels. My 954 has a clearish plastic container for both front and rear; we've used the bands and the hair things, forget what they're called, Squiggles or something.

I did once, but it was by accident on my '88 Fox 2-door wagon.  I almost shit myself and had a heart attack at the same time, as I was on the freeway during rush hour.  The only thing I was really worried about was the EMTs were going to blame the heart attack on the eight empty cans of Red Bull on the floor in the front passenger's footwell.

I see them on a lot squids' and stunters' bikes, they keep the bands on there (they claim) too keep the fluids off the bike and plastics if they should drop it hard enough to break the lines/reservoirs off.

I had em on my 954 purely for cosmetic purposes... the HRC covers are just an homage to Honda racing

alot of jdm cars use them as well and it is both for form and function. you can use the brakes too much to point the fluid boils and comes out (but this is done only by track or extreme riding. normal everyday riding wont cause this to happen.....and if it is maybe you need to relax more on your way to work). so you get cool points for having something that functions as well as looking good.

What kind of fluid were the race guys using that still boiled? The only time I've boiled my brakes was in my STi on my first track day. Too much braking. After I went to ATE, I never had a problem.
