Hey man, I ride a 1993 CBR 1000F. I have a 190 rear tire on it now and didnt have to change anything as far as swingarm goes, just take off the chainguard. I wouldnt go too much bigger than that or it is gonna handle like a bigger slug than it does anyway. Just my $.02 If you have any other questions about these older, but fun, bikes shoot me an email. shane_workman@insightbb.com

Hi Mustang!

I beg of you, start talking...

I have an 88 Hurricane and would love to have some modern sized rubber on there. I had a pair of 600F3 wheels, but they weren't even close to a match. I thought someone told me that the mid 90s CBR1000F wheels were an easy swap, but I don't have any details. One thing that I would like to do is keep my gear driven speedo.

So, how did you do it? What are the parts needed? Who is selling the kit that you mentioned? You are my wheel swapping Yoda.

Thanks!

I believe yo have to swap the swingarm on anything older than a 92, correct me if I am wrong greymustang. Then you can put up to a 180 rear on without rubbing on your chain guard. Sans the chain guard and you can do a 190, I think. The newer swingarms from a 92 and up CBR SHOULD fit your bike with little or no mods, I think.

So I have to replace my swingarm with the wheel swap? Hmm... I know I have room on my current swingarm-I just need a wider wheel. If I opt for the swingarm swap, do you happen to know if the lengths are the same or if there are any other differences? I'll have to check in to this and see what I find out. My other option is to have the stock wheel widened. There is a place in Stockton I think that will do it but it isn't cheap. I would be happy if I could fit a 160 on there, but a 180 would be OK too. Thanks!

Ok here is what you need to do it right. Swing arm,
rim, brake stay arm and caliper, and spacers all parts
from same year 90-96 1000f

the guy i know is in the navy and is out on the ship right
now when he gets back i'll see if he cares if i post his email
and then he can give you prices for the kit
here a picture of his bike he got the 208 on his
i know the kit is not cheap but not that bad

i call a junk yard and they wanted around 650
to unbolt the swring and send everything that was on it

Hmm. That has me wondering... I'm curious as to why the swingarm needs to be swapped. I have plenty of room for more tire as it is (I think). I'm pretty sure that I'd lose the inner fender though. If a swingarm swap is necessary, I'm wondering if the newer swingarm has significant changes outside of the width. (longer, different size at mounting pivot, possible geometry changes that may effect handling etc). I would love to have a newer CBR for a few days to play with and see how this swap would unfold. Remind me why I wasn't born into royalty one more time.

Damage caused by severe abuse and neglect by previous owner. All 4 pistons looked like this-compression was around 110 psi and top speed was about 110 if I tucked underneath the paint and ran WFO.

Flipped forks, Mustang? Good Lord, some one did some serious work getting THAT to happen. Did that require custom tripple clamps? What are the forks off of? And what is that pipe off of? It certainly can't be specific for a Hurricane. I bet that is the mystery bike at your local riding spots. Hell, if I run into anyone under 30 years old at the parts counter they think I'm high when I tell them I have a 1987 CBR 1000. Kids these days... hehehe

I just added the stiffest springs I could find (Race Tech) up front and a WP shock out back. Lindemann absolutely ripped me a deal on that rear shock. I'm amazed at the ground clearance I have with a new shock and springs set up for my weight. It's no contender for the championship, but I'm quite pleased with the bike all things considered.

Yeah, I'd like his email address if he can help with the wheel swap. That would be great!

Are you still able to run the speedo off of the GSXR front wheel?

FOOTPEG SCRAPING - MADE EASY !
I have done the rear wheel swap out on my 87 CBR1000F.
I bought a rim from a JUNKED 1990 CBR and swapped it out.
You do NOT have to change the swingarm, but you're limited to about 170 x 55 tire.
You might be able to get a 180 in there, but it starts getting tight.

The brake arm stabilizer bar needs to be modified to get around the tire as well.
And then there are different spacers that need to go in the wheel.

If you want more details or pics, let me know.

Here are a couple of pics of the rear wheel . .
sorry I don't have any better ones, or close-ups . . . I have since sold the bike and moved on to an 02 Blackbird XX.
I REALLY wish I could have kept the Hurricane as well -- I loved that bike !!

As mentioned earlier, the wheel was from an 90 CBR.
I modified the brake stablilizer arm to go out around the new, wider tire.
The stabilizer arm is only there to keep the caliper from spinning around, so anything goes as long as you keep it rigid and "in line". I welded a new piece of metal to the outside of the arm, then cut out a 4 inch section of the original arm where the new tire would have hit.
The original (stock) tire was a 140. I ended up putting a 170ZR55 on, and I think you might get away with a 180, but I wanted to keep the plastic mud guard on. Even the 170 tire ended up rubbing on the plastic guard a little bit.
The first ride I took with the new tire, I ended up scraping the foot pegs! It was AMAZING how much more leaning I could do, and still feel comfortable with the bike.
