Yeah I know, I made the same mistake the first time and the thing was on all the time. Tried both ways, anyway, but the best result was with the lights on the unit all the time. The negative goes straight to the battery so there's no grounding problems.
The wrong reading at idle is caused because at the ignition fuse there isn't exactly the same voltage as measuring straight from the batt. I can't connect it to the headlight like you did since they aren't on all the time (not US model).
Anyway, can't complain since it works, in a different way, but gets the job done and I'm not annoyed with that beeeep!

It's supposed to be on all the time, Daniel - only difference is the lights in the unit come on when the ignition switch is turned on.........maybe connect the orange line into the brake circuit.......
