think again. I know this is a bicycle, but how easy would have been for them to pull up beside our bikes with a truck and have four guys pick up a < 400 lbs. bike and toss it in?

No one even gave a crap about what they were doing. I would say that is since it is in NYC but I imagine that could happen in a lot of towns no matter the size. You are right, someone could easily grab a sportbike with a few guys and be gone.

Some thirty years ago my brother was sitting in his living room reading when he saw a pickup pull up next to his car port. Four guys got out. By the time he got to the front door they had picked up his BSA, thrown it in the back of the pickup and were driving away. Obviously he called the police, but his bike was never seen again. Took less that two minutes from the time he saw them get out of the truck until they were on the road. Admittedly it wasn't chained or tied down in anyway. Had it been this group might have passed it by. It happened in Great Falls, Montana, not New York City.

Buddy of mine, whose about 45 now, when he was 16 or so, stole anything he could find. He had a little pickup, and, doesn't even remember the number of bikes he stole. Whether it be bicycles, or, motorcycles. He had him and a passenger up front, and, two guys in back. They just rolled through store parking lots. THey stopped where they saw a motorcycle, all 4 jumped out, and, threw it in the truck. He said less than one minute of stopping, they were gone. He did eventually get busted and, spent a little time in a nice little square with bars on the windows. He's been legit since, but, now that he's got a Harley fat boy, he's not taking any chances with it. He's got the bolt down to the floor rod that goes through his wheel. Then, when he's out riding some place, he's got it parked right outside the front door on the sidewalk nearest the police cars parking spaces. And, has taught me afew things as well. Put your bike in a place that is the most consipicous, and, would take the most effort to get to. I'm sure all of you know this, but, sometimes it takes a nice wakeup call before it's too late.

It's waaaay too easy to grab a motobike....

I lost my key in Daytona one year while partaking in the midnight madnesss... After losing the keys/lock key too, my friend and I went back its location and basically stole it back from my original negligence. Cut the lock after a short trip to tool store and both myself (TWO PEOPLE) and my bud picked her up and put her in his truck. There is an easy method for two people believe. Took less than a minute to getter up since I was getting tired quickly! Strapping her down took much more time and we were off. Scary to think a large open bay van would have been even easier. No one cared or asked so I really didn't have to explain myself which made me much more conciencious about the whole thing...

TWO PEOPLE and it's gone - watch out. If I can do it.... well enough said for the pros!

ppl's bikes are stolen in SoCal all the time and in turn we all end up paying excessively high insurance premiums with even higher deductibles. Both my ninjas were stolen turn-by-turn from the same spot despite being parked between my car and the wall. The first time I was out of town so maybe I was asking for it. But the 2nd time was between the hours of 8 pm and 8.20 pm during which i had supper. Anyway i moved out of that area a while back.

my ins agent claims one of the reasons SoCal is vulnerable to vehicle theft is its proximity to the border & ports - i'm not pointing any fingers here since i know as many nice hispanics as bad ones. The guy who took me & my 1000rr out & took off last month was a hispanic and the guy who stopped and helped me was also a hispanic ...

i think the only way to safeguard our riding interests in through precaution and insurance although we all know that if someone wants to steal your ride, they will steal it come hell or highwater. An acquaintance's zx-10r was stolen from a secured/locked garage in downtown LA so now i park my 1000rr between my cars which are parked in a somewhat V-fashion in my garage. I figure that if i can't stop them from taking my bike i might as well make it as hard as hell for them

bTw the city's PD must be commended since in 05 they've been in the news for raiding a storehouse in south-central and ... a reseller in the valley who operated a chop-shop with authentically faked paperwork & such

I always put my bike inside my house in the dining room. I left her outside last night coz I was too tired and didn't feel to bring her inside. I'm glad when I woke up the next morning she is still there. The problem was I lost my only key...Gotta go the dealer to get another one....

Hey that ain't too far from what I have done in the past. When I was living WAAAYYYY up north (with no heated garage) I used to ride my bike into the house and straight into the bedroom so I could work on all my mods during the winter!!! Hallways were too narrow to put it in any other room, so that's where it had to go. Didn't bother me one bit...

First time my girl came over and saw my bike parked in the room she just shook her head and walked away. I told her "Hey it's my house, and if you don't like it, get the f*ck out." Thank you for that quote Eddie Murphy!!!!

that first link didnt work for me, i found it here though----> http://media.putfile.com/stealbike

as far as stealing bikes with a truck, i know some people who asked to use my brothers truck for that a few years back. i would say thats the preferred method for stealing a bike. seems to be how they always do it. dem bastards.

thats messed up. no one stopped or said anything to that guy. i would have stopped and ask wtf was going on and or call the cops.

kinda ot, but i live in an apt complex and really have no where to keep my bike except locked to my car. i planned on buying a heavy linked chain and a really good lock. running the chain (hopefully thru the frame/rear wheel) and locking it to my tow hooks on my car. do you think this would be safe or at least help me keep my bike longer? or should i get a storage unit and swap out my bike and car each time i want to ride? im kinda in a pickel living in a apt complex. however the complex next to me there is a bike not even locked up and he's had it there for a while. my other option is to keep it inside my apt, but i have a few steps to get up before getting inside.
thanks
