My 1999 CBR600F4 loses power and shuts down when it gets hot. Any ideas why?

You may also check to make sure the radiator fan is turning -- my bro's 99 f4 had that problem.... just needed to replace a fuse.

Mine is doing the same thing (2000 F4) and I replaced the fuse and still no change. It might be a bad fan. I'm planning on changing mine this weekend and we'll see.

NO, the fan doesn't come on. The bike gets up to running temp and then shuts down.

Does it bog down or just instantly shuts off? And how hot do you consider normal running temp?

It starts to bog down then dies. Normal running temp on my bike is usually close to halfway between hot and cold or a little below halfway. A little closer to cold but almost directly halfway is when it tends to shut down. I don't lose power (the lights, dash lights stay on) but it acts like it's not getting fuel. When it was crashed I had to change the tank and dash (whole front clip) along with fairings, tail section, all the plastics and painted areas except the front fender were changed. It won't start at all until it cools down and then will run great until it gets hot and it repeats the pattern. I have changed the fan fuse, it still happens. I have changed the rectifier, although I bought a used one on ebay the guy said was new, installed, taken out and in perfect working order. I have changed the stator bought new. I have changed the battery (new). Thanks,

It's not that is overheating, although it did once (all the way to the red mark) and that's when the problem started. It just won't keep running. It's only 5 min into the ride or I only get about a mile away (up to the midpoint or a little below on the temp gauge) and it starts bogging down like a sensor is telling it to shut off as to not damage the motor. I think from everything I've read on this site (30 plus things) that it is electrical in nature. Many others have said theirs did a similar thing and it was the rectifier. A couple of other people suggested a head light switch was malfunctioning and another guy said his problem was with the ignition module. I've already put $2500 into repairs after I crashed it and I'm afraid that if I keep going at this rate I'll spend twice what the bike is worth. The bike only has 5000 miles on it so it is pretty new for a 2000 f4. One guy said he thought because of the blown fuse with the fan that it sounded like the best place to start. I originally took it to the dealer and they said it was the stator, rectifier and battery. I changed those and still nothing. I'm super frustrated at this point and I just want my bike back. I crashed it in '04 and I have only ridden it about 100 mile since. Thanks

In fact it doesn't seem to happen UNLESS it IS being ridden. It won't happen when it's running sitting in the driveway.

No I haven't. What's the process for doing that? Is it something that is easy to do? I'm not much of a mechanic but I can do things that are pretty straightforward. Any info would be helpful and thanks for the heads up. I'll try anything. The weather is nice and I want to ride bad. Thanks,

If i'm not mistaken, thermostat should be on the left side of the engine. Pull the radiator hose off, drain fluid, and then you should be able to pull off the housing for the thermostat. After this, put in new thermostat, gasket, and put hose back on. Add fluid, and you should be good to go. I'm not sure on the install, but I think that is where it is located. It has to be off of one of the hoses, and I know that that looks like the spot on the side of the engine where the housing is.

For verification, check like servicehonda.com, or mcmartsoemhondaparts.com, and look at their microfische pages. Look at the coolant system pages, and see where the show the thermostat. That should show you just about what you need to know. Peace
