I installed my CCT the other day and now I am almost finished. Here is my problem. There is about a full to a half turn of the bolt through which the motor sounds smooth. So should I set it towards to loose side or the tight side?
Thanks

Really need some help on this. They say to loose will damage the motor, and too tight the chain will wear more rapidly. So shoul I go toward the tight side then?

Sorry for the slow response slim.  When I set mine, I ran the motor and tightened it very very slowly until I heard the chain rattle dissapate.  Once I hit that point, I went IN another 1/4 turn or so tighter.  Throw some threadlocker on that bad boy and set it for good.  Let me know if that helps man.

Good to hear.  I installed mine about 8K miles ago (including about 2K track miles ) haven't heard a peep from it yet.

Hey crazy horse I got an ape cct and have yet to install it. I'm scared to mess up the settings would it be too much trouble to ask you to write a brief tutorial on how you did yours so I can finally install mine?

Good choice on the Ape.  Thats what I chose.  It's actually pretty straightforward, however I installed mine with the engine out of the bike.  Also mine is a 93, so I'm not sure if fairings/frame will be in the way.  So that part I'm not too sure of, otherwise use the method I listed above.

Also at this time I had the valve cover off so I cheated a tad.  The initial tension on the part was set by somewhat eyeballing the tension between the cam gears.  After that was ROUGHLY ( they say 1/4 inch between gears) correct. I started the motor with my hand on the CCT.  And slowly, very slowly I threaded it IN (tighter).  When the noise from the chain went away or I was satisfied, I put another 1/4 turn on it, dab of some blue threadlocker, and cinched that lock nut down.  Let me know if theres anything else your unsure of, hope this helps.

You can get to it with the motor in. At least on a 97 as that is what I have. The only thing I had to do was push the radiator hose up and that was it. Oh and you can do it without removing the valve cover. When you put it on just start tightening it by hand, get it snug, hold it in place, then start the bike and tighten it from there.

I can get to it no problem. I was wondering if I had to get the valve cover off to set the proper tension. Taking the valve cover seems like a huge pain in the A$$. Something about feeling it by hand/ear makes me uncomfortable.

It made me uncomfortable as well. When I started I actually took the valve cover off only to find that no matter how much you turn it the slack in the chain isn't easily measurable. I ended up putting the bike back together and doing it by ear. Once you do it its not that bad. Just go with what crazy said, after you can't hear the chain anymore turn it 1/4 more of a turn and be done with it. But if you hand tighten it snug it will be at a point where it doesn't leave much slack in the chain so you will not damage it. Then put a wrench on it and hold it while you start it. Then tighten it from there with the wrench while you listen.

OK so basically these are the steps, let me know if I miss something:

1. take off the old CCT, (obviously)
2. put the new one on (with the new gasket)
3. hand tighten till it's snug
4. put a wrench on it and start the motor
5. listen and tighten till the chain noise stops
6. go about 1/4 turn tighter
7. Tighten nut
8. Lock it down with blue locktite
9. Breathe

Yep. Thats pretty much it. Thats what I did and my bike is running great now. No more irritating noise! Make sure you scrape off all the old gasket to though. I put a rag in the hole while I did that so the pieces didn't fall inside the motor.
