Chain is prolly RK or DID gold series.  Definitely not OEM.

It says DID on it, I will be sure to look it up now.  Thanks for the tip, I'm new to sportbike parts.  If you need a VW to go so fast it bends/cracks the firewall, I know much more...

Do you have a pic of the tank?  I would like one not beat in.  I don't have a desire to do stunts, so riding around with a beat in tank makes me feel like a liar.  I will definitely buy it if it's nice and round, even a scratch or two is ok.

Pics of current progress in a few minutes.

vwmaniacvr6 -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project - Looking to buy parts! (4/21/2008 6:39:57 PM)

Ok, massive progress since last week. I picked the motor up on Thursday and created this freakish unicycle on the garage floor:

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/thursday.jpg[/image]

Here are some side projects.

Broken tab on the rear plastics, I welded it together with a soldering iron, and painted it:

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/rearcrack.jpg[/image]
[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/inside.jpg[/image]

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/fendertail.jpg[/image]

The tank is beat, but functional, so I painted it to help match and hide the giant dents in it( painted pic is on the bike at the end of the post):

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/gas2.jpg[/image]

Here are the two taps that were fixed, welding cast aluminum is no joke:

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/Tab.jpg[/image]

I'm using the riser bars and controlls off a buell lightning and had to adapt the throttle cables. Here are the buell cables tight as they go on the 929 mount:

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/buell1.jpg[/image]

Now with the stock 929 cable end next to them:

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/buell2.jpg[/image]

I cut the 929 cables and took a thin grinding wheel to them and the nuts so they would slide over the buell cable:

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/buell3.jpg[/image]

They are larger than the buell cable housing ends, so slide together perfectly. Here is the final product:

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/buell4.jpg[/image]

And the "new" controls:

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/buellleft.jpg[/image]
[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/buellright.jpg[/image]

This adds a hi-beam trigger on the left contol and I already re-wired the kill/starter switches on the right side.

Here is the bike as of today:

My handlebar risers will be in this week, which makes it rideable, but not completely street legal, I still need headlights and a few finishing touches.  It started right up and no codes as well.  Thanks everyone so far for the deals on parts and helpful advice.

KidCr3nshaw -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project - Looking to buy parts! (4/21/2008 7:51:17 PM)

Man, I'm already so happy for you!!!

Yeah, I'll go snap some pics right now.  You need that upper?  It's all black with no decals and has a (nicely, I might add) repaired left tab - bondo+light scuff=perfect.

... I'll go snap some pics.

KidCr3nshaw -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project - Looking to buy parts! (4/21/2008 8:34:47 PM)

Well you're in luck... sort of.  Ironic, the guy that sold me the tank got rid of it because it feel from a shelf in his garage.  When I went to the garage to get the parts for pics, the tank was laying top-down on the gravel/dirt floor.  My advice is, if you buy this DON"T LEAVE IT ANYWHERE NEAR A GARAGE!

Anyway, it was only a small dent in the front right side, now it's got chipping around the gas cap and on the left top.  Doesn't matter to you anyway because you're painting it, I'm sure.  I'm gonna make you a sweet deal too.

I'll give ya the whole kitten caboodle for $125+ shipping.  If you don't need it all then you can have the tank for $50+ shipping.  I paid $100 for a nasty one... and I have pics to prove it [;)]  Also paid $100 for a fiverglass upper (doesn't have inner/side fairing mounting tabs).

Anyway, I'm happy for ya man.  Looking great!  Let me know if I can help ya.

vwmaniacvr6 -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project (4/22/2008 3:34:56 AM)

I'm really just interested in the tank, though that is a good deal for plastics.  I'll send you a PM with my shipping info and we can get things moving.

vwmaniacvr6 -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project (4/28/2008 5:43:31 PM)

I got my risers a few days ago and the headlights today.  I need to put on a left side footpag and mount the lights.  Then I'll finish wiring the signals and be on the road.  Pics tomarrow, hopefully...

Fatboy -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project (4/28/2008 8:48:11 PM)

Damn, that is a steal for that tank.  If you change your mind vwmaniac, I'd like to snag it up from you kidcrenshaw!  I'm bidding on some shittay tank on ebay now...

vwmaniacvr6 -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project (4/29/2008 3:58:17 PM)

I already bought it, should be here real soon.  If you want my dented crappy tank for the cost of shipping you can have it.

No pics yet, I'm in the middle of moving, so went crazy organizing the garage after messing with the brackets a bit.  They are ugly, but I have the mounting position how I want it.  I'll probably make new ones now that I have a pattern.  Also, I need to figure out the signals, the buell wires are real strange (go figure) so it might take a bit of hacking things up to get it right.

vwmaniacvr6 -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project - Running!! (4/30/2008 6:20:22 PM)

OMG it's on the street!!!

Crappy cell phone pic:

[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/whitevento/Custom%20929RR/IMAGE_032.jpg[/image]

I'll take better pictures later, but this at least gets something up.  I rode it about 80 miles today and couldn't be happier.  I would guess that the bike has somewhere between $1800-2000 as it sits, so I think I made out pretty well.  I'm taking it easy, but did manage to tach it out in 3rd, leaning forward a bit, and really liked how it feels.  I'm finding it difficult to go under 60, even in the city, and think I will have a ticket by the end of the June...

Edit - Also, I might bring the headlights down about 6-8" since they look unnatural that high.  I did it initally hoping to block more wind, but it doesn't help enough to keep them high.

NY Erion929 -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project - Running!! (4/30/2008 7:16:16 PM)

Looks awesome!!

The headlights lower will set it off nice..

JONATHANGT -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project - Looking to buy parts! (4/30/2008 11:31:46 PM)

vwmaniacvr6 -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project - Looking to buy parts! (5/6/2008 5:57:43 PM)

I got my luggage rack built today and mounted an ammo can (thanks Mike).  Tomarrow it will be removed and bedlinered, but it turned out great.  I'll take more pics of the final pained version tomarrow.

[image]http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l13/dmarino82/LastRoll-06.jpg[/image]
[image]http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l13/dmarino82/LastRoll-09.jpg[/image]

The can bolts on with 3 bolts so I can leave it at campsites or hotels when we stop with just a minute of work.  The rack takes about 5 min install/remove, but I will probably leave that on all the time anyway.  It doesn't get in the way and is barely wider than the tail section.

KidCr3nshaw -> RE: Scrapyard 929 - My Spring Project - Looking to buy parts! (5/8/2008 3:12:18 PM)

Yeah you gotta drop that front a bit... look MUCH better!

I just noticed those Buell parts you're using.  Those pictures of the cables are a perfect example of the quality of parts they use.  Just look at those cables and tell me which one looks like it came off a Chineese 110cc four-stroke kids ATV... ?

Anyway - looking great!!!  You'll have your tank in the AM and be riding at 12:30!  Have fun, good luck - ride safe.
