I've been riding a 1982 Yamaha Maxim for quite a while and came across a great opportunity to upgrade this winter.  A friend of mine bought a 929 for cheap that was forced to do stunts and tumbled across a parking lot at relatively high speed.  He sold a few bits and the frame was trashed.  The bike still ran and he rode it up and down the road a few times to see how the motor delt with the wreck.  Eventually he got lazy and didn't want to try and sell things so I traded him $100 cash and 4 months of storage/air compressor use for his truck for all the things seen below:

I then decided since it had brand new tires it would be best to give him another $175 for both wheels:

The front is bent up in 3-4 spots so I will probably just buy a new one, but it came with the rotors, calipers, lines, and lever.

Lastly here is the damage from the crash:

Also a broken off bolt in the front mounting flange.  I'll have no problem getting those repaired at a machine shop I use for custom work.  I waited all winter to find a frame and finally got one about a week ago on ebay.  The guy didn't advertise that it came with a clean title, but responded to my question about it that it did.  It is scheduled to arrive this Thursday so I will know for sure then.  In the meantime I have a car I promised myself I would sell before buying everything else for the bike, but I will update this thread as things come together.

In the meantime, I've been reading a lot of forums trying to gather as much info as I can for the build, so any tips or things to do while it's apart are more than welcome.  I'm not into flashy/shiny things and am planning on keeping the bike naked and dark/flat colors, maybe dirtbike bars solely because I like a more upright position and do a lot of miles.  I'm not interested in doing stunts, but would like to attend a few lapping days at a track sometime.

Edit - Whoops, you guys don't to img tags, I'll get those proper in a minute. (Fixed)

Looks like you got quite a bit of stuff for what you traded.  Hope everything goes well for you!

good luck man. I love stories like this. take your time on ebay and you could have the whole thing for less than a grand. so far I've got an upper ($30), tail ($25), and tank ($8) on ebay all included shipping

The frame and title came last week and it's in great shape.  There are only scuffs from where the ram-air tubes touch the frame.  I dropped the motor off at proto-tool so the mounts will be repaired and ready sometime late this week.  I'm gathering parts now, so if anyone has anything from this list your willing to sell, I will probably buy them over the next couple weeks:

Triple Tree and/or Bearings
Seat Frame
Headlight (any)
Taillight
Turn Signals
Shiftlever Assembly and Right Footpeg
Horn

I'm keeping an eye out in the classifieds and ebay, anything you guys can offer up is great.

as far as the shift linkage assembly, i have one from were i went to a reverse shift pattern, i would just have to find it!

keep in mind that if that is a future desire of yours to you can go ahead and knock it out by buying either a vfr shift lever or cbr 1100xx shift lever!

fewer moving parts.

either way i'll see if i can find that shift linkage for you.

That sounds like something that I would enjoy.  I don't downshift aggressively, so this would work great.

I found headlights as well.

Not an OEM headlight.  Since the bike will be mostly naked I settled on this set:

I did see a few on ebay, but the above is cheaper and most likely brighter as they are e-coded.  Plus, I'll have some 130w PIAA H4 bulbs left over from one of my cars I can put in.  Hopefully that won't melt the housings or set me on fire.  I'll probably hook them up to a 12V for an hour or two while I can keep an eye on them to test what gets hot and how badly.

Do you have the plastic that goes around the seats by chance?  I think I have most of what you listed lined up, just waiting on a guy to pay me for wheels I'm selling.  Also, if you have an extra radiator I forgot I needed one.  Thanks for all the interest and support everyone.

I have 99% of this bike ordered and on the way.  I'll be posting pics as it comes together.  I also meant to ask if the stock chain on these bikes have gold links?  I was told I may have a nice aftermarket chain, but figure you guys will know for sure.  I'll have to clean it a bit and look for markings or something.

Quick update, I got it mostly together and it started!  I'll post pictures tomarrow night.  My risers come in this week, and then all I need are the headlights to show up and I"m on the road.  It looks pretty ragged with the beatup gastank, but right now it's entirely function over form.

I've got forks and a minty tank for you if you're interested!!!

I could make it a nice deal for you - $250+ shipping.  Didn't see forks up there so I thought you might need them too, I dunno...

Let me know and good luck!

P.S.  I see you have forks...

Tank is still up for sale - I would do $100 for it plus shipping if you want a clean one.
