Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and I just got my first motorcycle.  It's an 88 cbr 600f.  Even though it's a beater, I still have fun with it.
I would like to take this opportunity to ask you guys a couple questions.  In the morning it starts fine but when I try to start it after school I have a heck of a time starting it.  Sometimes it's right away.  Any ideas??  Also, what type of motor oil should I put in the bike??  Any advice is welcomed.  Thanks.

I'm a second year at community college. I'm planning on transfering in a year.
When I'm at school it sits for about 8 hrs ( I start school at 8 everyday and wont leave till 4 or 5).  Usually it's very hot by the time I try to start it.  I'll try to use the choke but even that wont work.  Sometimes it will start, but it sounds like it's going to die and it dues.  I have noticed that it has an easier time starting in the morning when the temp is cooler.  Oh I forgot to mention that sometimes when I'm at a light and I have it in first gear with the clutch in it will die on me after a while.
Thanks for the reply 89cane.

Does your bike smell like gas when it's idling, like at the light?

If I could recomend you a tough oil, I would have to say any 15W-40 diesel oil would be a great choice to run in any motorcycle.  Reason being is because diesel oil contains just as much if not more anti-wear additives and cleaning agents.  It is also very shear proof and holds viscosity much better then most motorcycle oils.  Best of all, it costs less then half of any kind of motorcycle oil on the market.  Shell Rotella recently ran JASO MA tests on their new CJ-4 oils and concluded that it met the frictional tests for this class.  On another website I have seen used samples of Amsoil sheared out of grade within a matter of hours where as the diesel oils held much better viscosity.

thanks for the advice guys.  I actually forget to turn the switch off when I'm done riding...I dont know if that's a problem or not...It has a brand new battery.
Oh and one more thing how much oil should I put in it.  I'm asking because I dont know how much to buy.  Again, thanks guys.

I had the same turning off thing happen to me when i first got my bike. On the left side by the shifter is a black knob that says fuel. Make sure it is open all the way. Mine was parctially closed.

I turn the knob to "on", but maybe i'm not turning it all the way.
Regarding the smell of gas at the lights, all I smell are exhaust fumes from the other cars.  I dont know if that is over powering the smell of gas.  Maybe there is a gas leak...becuase I droped the bike this morning and gas started to go all over the place (dont know if that's normal or not cuz I'm a newbie to motorcycles).  Could that be a possible cause??

I was just asking if you smell gas at a light to see if maybe your mixture was rich, not to see if there's a gas leak or anything.

And yes, if the bike tips over, gas will come out. Don't tip the bike over.

If you're having trouble starting the bike when it's HOT out, then the choke is not the thing to try. The choke is what you need to use if it's cold out.

My suggestion is that you just make sure to remember to turn the gas OFF when you get off the bike during the day, and keep the tank pretty full if you can. The more full the tank is, the colder the gas will stay on a hot day; the less gas will evaporate in the whole fuel system.

Hey, Welcome!

I had the same problem on my 1989 Cane when I first purchased it. It wouldn't turn on. I would actually have to jump start it (hard to do, dont try it unless you been riding a while).

But now, it turns on just fine. I think a few things:

1. only use 91 Octane
2. Do a full tune-up. Spark plugs, wires, oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter.

At first mine wouldn't turn on A LOT, now its great. I think since I've kept using good (91) gas that the carbs aren't backed up or anything.

Good luck.
