ml.rust -> help please (4/4/2008 12:44:39 PM)

Hey guys, I am in need of some help. My husband is in iraq and will be home in about 2 weeks. I decided to get him his dream bike, a honda cbr 954. The bike is way to big for me to drive but i was able to ride it to my house however a red light keeps coming on and I have been told the oil needs to be changed. I don't have the balls to take it on the freeway to get it to cycle gear to have them change the oil so I figured i can change the cars oil so i can do the bikes. I have gone to cycle gear to get the oil and filter but they dont seem to want to help me, they told me they can't tell me what size filter i need or what kind of oil. Can anyone help me out with this info??? Oh and one more question and this one is really gonna make me look bad but how do I get to the filter?. Thanks for any help.

Melanie

That's awesome you bought your man his dream bike. As for changing the oil you only need to remove the right side plastics. You can get to the drain plug and the filter from that side. Full synthetic 10w-40 is best but it's a bit spendy. It takes a little over 3 1/2 quarts. When the bike is level bring the oil level to the top line in the glass on the side of the case. I can't believe a bike shop couldn't get you the right filter. Try a honda dealer.

Where are you located? If you are close to me I might be able to help you with any work you need.I'm in Cali.

I am in Lake Elsinore. I was able to get the oil plug off and I am working on the filter right now. This is a lot harder than the SUV we have.[image]http://www.cbrforum.com/micons/m13.gif[/image] I have gone to 2 bike shops and they were both sold out of filters so I am going to have to go to temecula and try cycle gear again. After I have the oil done all I have to do is get the new back tire put on. I am sure that will be loads of fun. [image]http://www.cbrforum.com/micons/m9.gif[/image]

Sorry Melanie,I'm in central California.As far as a oil filter I use Fram ph6607 which you can buy anywhere.I buy mine @ Walmart for about $4.00.I'd would also get a can of brake cleaner(you will need it to clean the oil off of the headers when you remove the filter)just spray it and let it dry or once you get the oil in it just start it and let it all burn off.

TK954RR -> RE: help please (4/4/2008 8:34:02 PM)

I am going to assume Melanie you have bike stands then? If you do taking the wheel off the bike is pretty easy, then just throw it in the car and take it in. Unless you have a tire machine, actually removing the tire from the rim is not something you want to try. And if ya need a walkthru on wheel removal just ask, i am sure any of us can help ya.

Wow is about all I can say right now. You guys have helped me out so much. I feel like a total dork. To tell you the truth I dont have a stand I was planning on putting the bike on its side but then I figured I would never be able to get down without breaking something let alone get it back up again, So once I get the filter on in the morning I am going to take it for a spin around the block and then see if i feel like i have the balls to ride it the 20 miles down the freeway to get the new tire put on. The guy next door was cracking up at me as I was trying to get the oil plug off, i think heman put it on. It took me about a hour to get it off, that is after I spent 40 mins finding all the bolts that i needed to take off of the plastic. I used to ride a 600 but that was 3 years ago and this bike seems so much bigger, i cant reach the ground without really leaning to the side and then i have trouble getting going without feeling like i am going to tip. I am only 5-2 and 105lbs. I may have taken on more than i can chew. Thanks again guys I really didn't think that I would get any help!!!

TK954RR -> RE: help please (4/4/2008 9:04:58 PM)

Without the stands i definatly would not try the tire swap, please please please do not lay it down [;)]  Ride it carefully tomorrow, these bikes have a lot more power than the 600 you rode a few years ago. Being a hubby i can tell you just how much i would love something like this, it would be unbelieveable. Honestly i would not even care, or notice probably that it needs a new tire. So if you dont feel comfortable taking the trip just leave it. I can guarantee he would not be dissapointed at all.

letsride -> RE: help please (4/4/2008 9:16:10 PM)

That's the same thing I was going to suggest not to worry about the tire.If my wife got me a bike I would not care if I had to rebuild it to ride it.If you don't feel comfortable riding it then don't.It's not worth it.

ml.rust -> RE: help please (4/4/2008 9:26:34 PM)

I kind of figured that If i layed the bike on its side my husband would kill me. The first time I took the 600 for a ride i forgot to put my feet down and ended up on the ground, he has still never let me live it down. The back tire is pretty bad you can see the metal in spots around the whole tire and the center seam  all the way around, it has close to nothing left on it.So i think I am going to have to put my big girl pants on and drive it down or rent a u-haul trailer. I hope you guys are right and he love's it. It has taken me 7 months to find the one of his dreams, i hope i remembered everythng that he wanted. Any ideas on extras that i could put on it? I have put on new lights front and back and some cool mirrors, i also replaced all 4 pegs from silver to red and i put a new batt in.
