What's the best solution out there for in-helmet communication that would allow the use of an iPod and cell phone?

AutoCom.

If you don't need bike to bike, or don't mind mono-sound, then get the easi model... If you need stereo, want to share the phone with your passenger, want more input plugs, Push to talk, etc - the get the Active model.

I have the older Pro-M1 model... You can find used on ebay, but you have to make sure you get all of the cables, otherwise it will not be cheaper than buying the unit as a kit.

I have not personally used the chatterbox - but the Iron Butt riders I talk to call it lots of names other than chatterbox.

It is pricey - ~250 to 800 depending on options - realistically 350
It is good - and tested to ~90+ mph with speakers, 140mph with in ear speakers.

My unit has a GPS connected (built in MP3 player), and an FRS radio for bike to bike communication... I also have my passenger helmet wired so I can chat with my passenger.

Thanks for the info on the autocom system . . . certainly seems capable.

Out of curiosity, are there any wireless systems out there? Bluetooth, perhaps?

The Autocom has bluetooth... but the headsets are wired to the unit (you put the speakers inside the helmet, and a short cord dangles out the back - standing next to the bike you pull the cord out of the underseat area, plut into the helmet and get on).

I have NOT used the bluetooth personally. I do know my GPS unit is bluetooth and that'd be how I'd link my phone in. That is a unique wiring situation though.

I am not familiar enough with other systems. I like the idea of the chatterbox - in that it is all one unit - BUT that has limitations for expansion, and I hear the quality is not the same.

Maybe another member here uses something else. Another good searchable resource is ADVRider.com (Adventure Riders - if it works for them it works for anyone ;))
