Just don't do what one of the guys did....put plenty of mracle oil in the pots with the tank off, then spun the motor with plugs out and got a miracle oil facewash, shirtwash, jeansclean.....ar ar giggle snort, choke....no names, for fear of retribution....he he

Very thin machine oil, Like WD40 or Q20, good for rust penetration, lubricating the bores when a bike's been standing too long, etc etc. Gives you a nice speckled appearance all over your clothes, your face, your garage, if you spin the motor with the tank off.......

Update:

I started on the carbs this weekend. The carb body on #2 cracked as I unscrewed the top cover--DOH. Must have been a weak casting. The donor carb set came in from Ebay, so I transferred the needles and jets to that setup. I saw why the bike was sitting--Pilot #1 was 100% clogged and the mains were 60% obstructed. There was a crack on one diaphram as well that was repaired, but I threw this one out.

Interesting note: The 1990 carb casting is different than the 88-89 version. The 1990 has a fuel rail type of balancer on the top of the carbs, wheres the earlier ones do not.

It looks like it has a Dynojet kit in there. The plugs were perfect, so I transferred everything as it sits (DJ118 mains, 40 pilot, 3rd clip)

I didn't see any adjustment for the pilot jet?

BTW..I had to use hot water on the carb holders and yank pretty good to get the carbs out. Also I removed the airbox screws to make more room.

I got her started today..mostly. It's running on 3 cylinders with #4 not working. I'll dig deeper tomorrow..

If you're running with the tank off, it's probably the vacuum pipe between carbs 1 and 2 that hasn't been blocked off.......?

Update: I've cleaned and re-cleaned the carbs. but I'm running on 3 cylinders. I'm going to the cycle shop for a set of fresh plugs.

The hoses look like they are routed correctly. The 2 vents between 1-2 and 3-4 have hoses on them. The vacuum ports are closed, with the exception of #1 which is where the petcock line is going. We'll see how it goes.

Update:

New plugs didn't help for cylinder 4. I pulled the carbs, cleaned #4 again, blew all orifices, vents, and jets. I then replaced the fuel lines. This time I used my motion pro gas tank and it is now running on all 4.

While it was running I took the time to flush the radiator.

Next up...getting it on the road. Need to do clutch master cylinder, brake job, and chain.

My Hurricane tells me it's running low on gas by running on 3 cylinders.....I then change over on the move and it clears in a few seconds as the gas gets through. maybe when the tank has been cleaned, put some more gas in it and run on reserve setting, to see if that was maybe the cause...

Well I'm a few weeks into the project and I'm rebuilding the bike from the ground up, except for the engine which is good.

It's almost totally stripped now: The front forks are off and the rear tire if off as well. Honda really engineered the bike well, but I'm a little worried about how the heck I'm going to put it back together. lol

I finished the valves tonight and last weekend I did the chain and sprockets. I think I'll take the time to remove and paint the "acid washed" swingarm too.

During the week I also powdercoated the pegs and the heel plate. A trip to the hardware store for stainless steel hardware will be in order as well.

So this bike will be pretty much restored when I get it back on the road.

Someone tell me how great these bikes are so I stay motivated!!

This week I'm finishing up on rebuilding the front forks, Vance and Hines Exhaust, and rebuilding the refinished pegs/brake lever/shift lever.
I picked up bettter calipers of ebay and installed new pads off them. I also have new tires mounted.

So..with that the rest is:
Install forks, steering, front brakes, front tire.
Move jackstands to rear of the frame and install the spare swingarm I painted.
Install rear caliper and pads
Sync carbs
Finish rad fluid
Fluid for brakes/clutch
