id try to put the airbox cover back on with a new filter in it and see where that takes you less air = better running in this case

airbox cover is on, i even took a look at the carbs when i put it back on. they are very clean. the bike starts, and when you have the choke all the way down it revs up to 4k, and will run around, but you can barely touch the throttle before it starts to get sluggish and die. it shifts through all gears, but in order for it to not rev so high on stops, you have to push the choke up until your ready to take off. the air filter was kind of dirty, but im pretty sure this problem goes farther then the air filter. its so nice out i just want to ride her with the new body on. i would have easily taken her to the shop, but for some reason they don't work on anything older then ten years.

1. when the choke is off, what does the bike idle at when warm? 2. if the idle is low in q1. have you tried to adjust it? 3. if have done q2. then going back to your first post of not being able to rev higher than 2k could mean a fuel delivery problem. i'd have to think about this a little more. if fuel delivery to carbs is okay, meaning everything from the carb back (pump is ok, fuel filter is clean, tank is flowing gas, etc), then i would have to *guess* you either have a fuel circuit problem with the carb(s), carb sync, or something else related. have to check my manual to see. 4. as for the mechanic not working on anything past 10 years old is just lame. that pretty much says to me he doesn't want to deal with carbs. or maybe he just doesn't know how.
