hello, I was out today riding and when i started up my bike it had a stange knocking noise. One of my friends mentioned that his clutch basket once made a simliar noise. But to go along with the knocking it started to feel like it was missing on a cylinder when im riding with the throttle at a neutral postion, when i give it gas to accelerate it runs just fine and as soon as i go back to a neutral area where im just holding constant speed it starts missing/sputtering. And a little more icing on the cake, by friend told me that when he was behind me riding he could see black smoke coming from the exhaust when i get on the gas. The bike has been sitting for some time, probably 6 months, and i recently put on an aftermarket exhaust and a K&N air filter so it will probably be running lean. old gas too, really old with no stablizer.

bad spark plug? not enough power to a spark plug? Clogged fuel injector?just the gas? hopefully not a piston head or rod going bad,

If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Drain the old gas, fill with fresh. Take out plugs, replace with new. Fire up the bike and kick some arse.

exactly, bad food is not good for bikes, especially for our girls

haha ok, i just put new plugs in less than ten miles on them, you think i might have fouled them by running old gas? or just put in fresh gas and then kick some arse? Thanks guys!

bad food never good for our girls, mechanical or human

yeah just replace the plugs and replace the fuel in the tank. See how things are doing. Black smoke is from the cylinder dropping and dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, and if you are having an ign. miss, then that unbalance will only make the clutch basket knock that much more. Had the same problem with knocking and had to sync throttlebodies, replace plugs and inspect for any unplugged or broken vacuum lines. Beware bike runs hot, and there is a lot of under tank heat and will dry the plastic fittings and make them break, even just by engine vibration. So be careful about that. Let us know what happens after you did these things?

ok, i will get all that done and see what happens. I am just going to put the old spark plugs back in for now, they were fine i was just replacing them as regualr maintenece, so ill see what happens there. I should be able to check it all out this weekend so ill give an update here as to how it goes. Thanks for the help!

Thanks. Its still red and black, but changed it up a bit since i went down a couple weeks ago. New pics soon, but thats another thread. Let us know if ya need more help with yours.

Well it rained and was freezing all weekend so i didnt get anything accomplished, Its going to be nice around here later on in the week so ill be able to get out, try some stuff and see what that 54 is made of.
