Get a suit. Cheaper than buying street gear and way more protection.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm not sure if a full suit will be practical for me right now if I use it as my daily commute to work.

Neither is proper gear if you have to change your clothes at work. You can always get a 2-peice suit with a loose fit and wear your clothes under it if it's a short ride, or carry your clothes in a backpack. You haven't even mentioned pants (no, jeans are not proper gear). But hey, it's quite literally your own ass on the line when you go down (and you will eventually)...

I do appreciate the input so far, that's why I'm here. I haven't decided on which pants I like yet so far, that's why I haven't posted it up. Same goes for boots

Where in Iowa are you? If you want to get a better helmet for almost the same price look at the Scorpion EXO-400 https://www.riverwayracing.com/store/product.php?productid=4&cat=4&page=1 Free Shipping so you might end up just about paying the same anyway and get a better helmet. Here is a review on the EXO-400 by Webbikeworld July 2007 http://www.mwmotorcycles.com/forum/index.php?page=9 As far as my personal opinions go, the HJC is not worth it. You wont be happy. I owned one before I think it was a c-35 model or something like that...probably comparable to the one you linked to. The worst part about it is the visor...it will blow up in high wind. HJC markets to the mass by low prices and decent graphics but the overall quality just isnt there in my opinion. I have a gmax cruiser helmet currently in my pile of helmets and it is an ok helmet....havent had to use it yet and it doesnt have a shield to know how well they hold up but I can imagine its probably similiar to the HJC maybe worse. They both would be better than nothing and would probably be fine for you but if you want to spend just a little bit more you can have a Scorpion EXO-400 that rates good, protects good, and is snell / DOT certified just like you want.

I am in Cedar Rapids. As for the Scorpion helmet, I will look into it, thanks! One reason I started looking at the Gmax was the webbikeworld helmet of the year 2007 award (same year as the scorpion review) http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/gmax/gm68s/ The visor on the GM68 is supposedly awesome (unlike the HJC you mentioned) according to a couple different reviews. I tried on a Z1R Eclipse, HJC Symax, and HJC CL-15 (the best of the three) at a local shop. All felt decent to me, but then again I'm new to this whole scene, so over time I'll develop a sense for it I hope. Thanks for the comments!

I just sold a EXO-1000 to a guy in Cedar Rapids last week. Small World. As far as the Gmax goes, I just read the review and it seems to be a nice helmet for the money. That is probably a great buy it sounds like from the review. I dont think you will find another helmet that cheap with as good of a review. If you decide to go with a Scorpion I can help you out. I just would definately not get an HJC. I just dont like them from my personal experiences with them.

Try newenough.com as well... don't miss their close out section either... I think they had a leather pair of pants for 179 and a matching jacket for 199. They've got a good mix of gear. If you are serious about commuting, want a 1 piece suit - then for a bit more money the roadcrafter suits are worth looking at. It is a serious touring suit with good protection and good product support. ( http://www.aerostich.com/product.php?productid=16133&cat=248&page=1 ) What I found has happened with my gear - I have brought ok gear starting. JR jacket/pants... Each year I replace something. Last year I got ANOTHER pair of gloves and a set of side/tail bags. This year I brought a new helmet and a lot of communication equipement. Next year I'll buy a suit. Gear costs a lot - great gear costs EVEN more. Not many of us can dump 5k into a bike and another 3k into gear... so we spread it out. JR textile gear will be good enough for touring/commuting, but not for the track. I have personally tested the JR jackets at 60+mph in a lowside - very happy with the jacket. They are a crash once thing.... so leather is a better investment in the long ride (better protection and can be rebuilt)

Thanks for the comments woot. Since this will be my first foray into the world of biking, I'm not thinking any track days are in my immediate future. I have a car to autocross for that right now. Glad to hear JR can survive a crash (and glad you're OK after). It is true that I can't go drop 3k in gear at the moment, have to pay for the bike! :) Right now I'm still leaning towards the supermoto jacket, and my bike will mainly be a commuter/weekend easy rider sort of thing initially at least.

I wear a two-piece Joe Rocket matching Jacket/Pants to work everyday. It's not a problem at all. I do use the Backpack to carry my clothes, shoes, clear visor, etc. It has just become part of my life. I never ride without full gear. Helmet, (Shoei RF-1000), Leather Gloves, (Racer), Leather Pants, (Joe Rocket Blaster), Leather Jacket, (Joe Rocket Blaster), Boots, (Sidi Vertigo Corsa). quote:

Well, I don't see how a two-peice suit is that much more impractical than a good set of zip-together gear if you're changing into street clothes either way. Besides, the way I see it, the more guys wearing suits, the cheaper our insurance premiums will be. Also, for the record the Scorpion EXO1000 is an overpriced peice of junk (I have one, but read the review online)... get an 700 or get a different brand.

I have both the EXO 400 and 700 and they are great helmets. I prefer it over my HJC AC11 any day. The EXO1000 is overweight and not worth the $$ IMO. I STRONGLY suggest trying on the brand of helmet before buying them. They all fit differently (ie. oval vs. round) Enjoy the ride!

Not to mention the vents don't work. At all. Not a one of them. They make noise, of course.
