We all know that Fuel Consumption is/can be affected by a large number of variables, too many to list. Nevertheless, I would like to see what everybody else is averaging and how their bike's/ride conditions affect FE. In particular, I'm wondering to what extend jets increase consumption. I calculate my FE to be somewhere around 40-47mpg (5-6L/100km). I generally ride short distances (no long trips yet), temperatures between 55-70F (10-20C), mixed RPM shifting (4-5k with occasional redlines), some stop-and-go traffic (15-20min in first gear working the 'clutch muscles'). The bike is not yet jettet but will be soon. How big of a hit should I expect after jetting? TIA for the replies and please post your conditions/FE numbers. Edit: Here's an easy way to convert MGP to L/100KM and vice versa: MPG = 235.215/(L/100km) L/100KM = 235.215/MPG

I doubt it will change much; the main jets are only a big deal from about 6-12K, so for city driving, etc. I bet your mileage should stay about the same.

My carbs need to by synced and my fuel tank only holds 3 1/2 gallons due to the bondo and dents. I average about 90-100 miles before I fill up, I have run out right around this range. Keep in mind, my carbs are not synced and running rich. So I am estimating about 25-30 MPG.

I have about the same riding as the original poster and I get around 50-55 mpg. I have almost no stoping at lights though

rrasco, with those numbers, I think there might be more to your high consumption than just a carb-sync.

I'm open to suggestions, but my bike does idle at abour 2K after riding around. I think there is too much fuel in the carbs at that point. It does idle appropriately at 1,100-1,200 after warming up and on occasion at lights. Keep in mind, this is all city riding as well with hella traffic.

that is still pretty high. my buddy gets about that with his zx11, and he has a lot of motor work done! floats sticking a bit perhaps?

Carbs have been cleaned before, but that was probably a year ago. I'll probably clean them up when I sync them.

I've just learned how far a tank can take me... the hard way. I got stuck in heavy traffic for over an hour this morning and as soon as it started rolling again, the bike started bugging down.. I lost one cylinder, then another, then another... I had no idea what was happening, I was lucky that she finally died next to an on-ramp so I was in a somewhat safe(er) spot. After I drained the battery trying to start it up again, the 'light' came on. I ran out of fuel. Didn't think I was even close to the end of it which is why I never turned on the reserve. 2 Hours and 135$ towing fees later, I learned my lesson. Never trust a tank that's been used for mostly idle-away-in-traffic commuting. So rrasco, now I understand what you're saying...

That sucks. Nothing I haven't done before though, lol. A few times I have gotten lucky and been able to roll into a gas station. Others, I got to push my bike miles in full gear in July.

what about the reserve?? you guys don't leave the reserve forr just such an occcasion?

The petcock on my bike doesn't work right. I don't know if my tank's reserve works either. However, I have a new tank and petcock so that issue will be solved soon. In dalex's case, he killed his battery. Then again, did you try bump starting it dalex?

187 miles on my last tank but wasnt completely empty. I make it a point to reset my trip after every fillup. Mostly city travel with short trips usually 10 to 20 miles.

There was no space for me to try to bump start it: I stopped going uphill and cars were flying by me at 60mph. I was stuck between the freeway and the on ramp (behind the cement separator) where vehicles accelerate go get on the main lanes. Then again, bump staring it wouldn't have worked either because that's what I had to do once I filled her up. Took 4 tries with someone pushing me from behind before she fired up. I presume that's because the carbs and fuel pump were completely starved of fuel and it took some juice and a few tries before everything got fed again. Probably didn't have enough left to even ignite the spark plugs after I was done trying (prior to relizing I ran out of fuel). As I said, lesson learned. I'll be laughing about it in a while but it wasn't amusing then and there.
