I will never get anywhere close to 4 gallons in my tank let alone just over three...or maybe I just fill too early when I see it's close to the bottom of the tank... I have never been able to put in over three gals.

That's funney FNQuick.  From your picture, your tank looks just like mine does as it sits on the bike. I put well over 3 gallons in mine all the time though. Huh????? I'm mystified....

16L tank, I usually fill up at around 170-180km. Milage works out to about 40mpg

I'm also having some issues with my carbs, which I need to get sorted. Then the milage might imporve a bit...maybe not, cause I think it is just sticking floats.

How far do you let the fuel go down in the tank before you fill? I let it get down to the hump straight under the filler cap...from that point, it takes three gals. and mileage wise I'm right about 150-ish.

You know ... I never reallynoticed. When I bought her, I ran her until I had to go on reserve to see when I should start looking for gas. She started cutting out at around 165 miles on the trip meter. From then on, I've just tried to fill the tank between 150 -160 miles.

My Clymer service manual gives the capacity at 4.23 gal. with the reserve being 0.8 gal of that. I guess I do only put a little over 3 gal. in it at the pumps.

Might California models have smaller tanks for some reason?

No, our bikes all share the same size gas tank, 4.2 gallons. Some of you just fill it a little sooner than is needed. There is nothing wrong with that. Pushing a bike with no fuel is not much fun.

I can get nearly 200 miles from a tank, but I usually fill up around 165 miles, that is two and a half days of commuting for me. On the safe side I figure I get 40 mpg, though I know I actually get 52.

Where are you guys getting these 3 gallon tanks????? Are they plastic race units or something? I've looked very hard and I can't find anything on a 3 gallon tank for the F2 OR F3. What gives???

There isn't a three gallon tank. As FNQuick said, at the top of the hump where it looks like the fuel has been used from the main part of the tank it will take 3 gallons. On my bike I can easily go 3 inches or so below that point before reserve. IIRC, i put 3.7 gallons in it last year without hitting reserve and 3.9 gallons about 4 miles after hitting reserve once.

Anyway, I normally fill up at 145 miles and my mpg averages between 40-45 depending on how new the oil is.

Krokus, that is about what I figured for the fuel tank. I can get over 3.5 gallons in mine without hitting reserve, but I always get it to the top of the fill area, almost to the point it overflows. I just feel bad about using a cc for a $12 gas purchase and want to get the most miles before I fill up again.
