I got my bike last season and have been riding it a lot - 5K miles since mid summer last year... This is a great first bike.

The problem is-
It's always made an odd noise when I have the bike in neutral and idling, but it goes away as soon as I pull the clutch in. It's not a terrible noise, but it definitely sounds like something is a bit off. It’s sort of a light rattling noise – kinda like the chain is suddenly too loose. (It’s not.)

Any ideas about what might be causing the noise? I was going to have some time this weekend to dig into it, but I thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone knows what might be causing it.

I'm still a bit new at bike maintenance, so please be specific in your diagnosis.

The fact that it goes away when you pull the clutch in, then my guess would be that its the clutch basket, if so, then the noise is perfectly normal. Also when in neutral you have vibrations coming from the fairing etc, that can make a noise that also die down when you use the clutch.

+1.... completely normal. for some reason, the F3's are little noisier than other models. but again, completely normal.

Well that's a relief... and I owe you guys one - you just saved me from chasing down a problem that wasn't there.

Cheers.

mine makes noises too. I was wondering about that. Thanks for posting. I would have been tracking down problems that were not there.

All CBRs do it .. mine did it from brand new and has never got any worse ... just the clutch basket rattles a bit I think :-)

FWIW aftermarket, stronger-rated springs will make the noise disappear.  Just something to keep in mind next time you replace your clutch.

Completely normal, though.  If we hadn't figured that out already

good day, I am currently looking for my first cbr600f3. I already seen a good example though somethings bothering me with the engine. The bike started right up but after a few seconds I hear a noise in the right side off the bike. I can best describe the noise as irregular  like a chain brushing up a metal, it comes and goes. I was thinking it was the timing chain though I have been through many bikes in need of camchain and it doesnt sound like a high pitched rattling. I felt that it was like coming of the right side which is where the bikes cam chain is located. How would I determine if its the bike clutch that rattling and not the camchain. Thanks in advance for the reply

idk i got a bike recently and i started hearing the same exact noise that you describe.
then it started leaking oil the next day, and sure enough it was the cam chain.
i don't no how to help you but just saying to be careful with it.

i brought it to a honda dealer and they said they need to atleast fix the top end and that its gonna cost a minimum of 1,200$.
what would you say is an average price to fix, or does that seem about right?
