So I just got my bike all back together and running. It's happy sitting in the garage. It revs up without any hesitation and seems to be perfect (minus a leaky petcock... do I just replace the O ring to fix that?) Anyways, when I take it out onto the road, it goes great up to about 4 grand then is a real dog. sputters and just doesnt want to go much more. Any ideas? I don't know if it is spark right now or not, but the plugs could be fouled. Would that yeild results as described? I'll check the plugs tomorrow. The thing i am most concerned would be if this has somethign to do with my carbs. I'm fairly comfortable doing pretty much anythign but carbs on my bike.
The carbs are from my 96 engine (ran like a champ before i took the engine out, and i didnt mess with the carbs at all), and I just got done putting a 98 engine in it. I didn't think it would matter much.

Any ideas? ever have similar problems?

Sounds like fuel starvation. Make sure all of your seals are tight around the carbs. Being that your petcock is leaking, does it flow ok? I would pull the line off of your petcock to see if it flows a decent amount of fuel.

It could also be the 98 engine required bigger carbs, or bigger jets. I think they were the same, but I dont know for sure. I would get the specs on a 98 engine and see if the carbs you have are the same.

Also, Do you have the air box on and sealed up? No air box can make the bike run like crap.

Airbox and / or slow speed solenoid. I had a FUN time with mine and it was doing the same thing. I ended up finding my solenoid went bad. Right around 4-6k it would dog out real bad then pick back up but not really strong.

+1 sounds like that solinoid. Anyone have a test that can be done? Im looking through my manuals to see if theres anything but i havent found anything yet.

Here's the thing. It doesn't pick back up after 6k. and after about 3rd gear, it doesn;t have the balls to accelerate. It actually decelerates.

Ok, a quick reply to this one would be great..
After investigation, you know those little "flap" things in the carbs?

Ok, mine don't move. If I give it full throttle they still dont move (not running)
Does it have to run to open those up?
This seems like it could be the problem.

I don't think mine opened with my airbox off and the bike running either. But it does sound like the solenoid. Kinda like putting the choke on full at 4k going down the road?

Thing is, everything was PERFECT when i took it apart. Ran like a champ. I don't see how it could be dead now.

I would make sure it's hooked up (all the hoses correctly). Did you do the F4 guage swap or do you have the stock ones?

Ok, so I checked it out and one of the hoses that somes off the solenoid (THANK YOU SO MUCH)
was off. I couldn;t see it without taking the brackets n crap off of the carbs, but its ok now!!!!

i think its closer to the fuse box behind the air box...i think there is a diagram on the top of the air box
