that gives me plenty to look for.If i take the rear wheel off and have a look at these cush drive rubbers tomorrow, Is there anything obvious to look for to indicate wether they are ready for replacement.

I was having the same problems as you, and, like Gill, I feathered the clutch to have a smoother power delivery at very low revs. I wasn't happy about it though.
So, when I got the opportunity to go riding with the honourable R1000 I asked him about it, and he said, like Shadow also proposes, to raise the idle.

thank you to everyone for their invaluable input. I tried the simplist and cheapest solution first, which was to bump up the idle speed.Got the bike to running temperature, then increased idle speed to 1200 rpm. The bike is now much more pleasurable to ride.Much appreciation to all

Good all round result - and cheap too - (that's the best bit, Honda parts being so expensive) funny how sometimes we get too technical, and look for problems........
NICE ONE !

What are cush drive rubbers?  Never heard of them until I read this thread.  Damn, one more thing to worry about . . . .

They're the rubber "cushions" that fit inside the rear hub, and take some of the impact when you pull away - without them, we'd probably snap a lot more chains or damage more sprockets than we already do, Art. They don't often give trouble, so relax....
