It's not a big deal if you take a class where the instuctor has guns. I shot a Sig226 but I won't be carrying one. My instructor had over 25 different handguns to use. You should really try out some different guns, if at all possible, before you buy.
I recommend not buying before your class. You can always shoot and practice later on. Besides, that class and the license will cost a pretty good portion of $600. All in all, my class cost 200 (I took a longer, more intensive one) and my license cost 105$ and the photo from wallgreens cost $8. With a cheaper class, you could cut that down some but your training will be less. We got a nice lunch in mine. I guess this really depends on your state law, but in MI with my CPL, I can walk into any gun shop and buy a gun then and there. It's a perk that may be in your state, but research it.

Also, research your state laws, a lot of states allow "Open Carry". As long as it can be seen by other people while it is on your person, no permit needed. Hip, shoulder holster outside your shirt, whatever--as long as it is visible. Plus, the visibility is an immediate deterrent...who's gonna **** with a biker sporting a gun right there for God and everybody to see?

Go with the others have said and see what fits your hand. I don't think Glocks are all that expensive and can be had new for $500-$550 and less used. When I need small I will go with the G29, but even it is a little heavy. The G26 (9mm) is a nice subcompact. I have shot one of those quite a bit. The G32 is a good midsize with a thin profile.
When I can carry larger size, I usually will go with my Walther (40 S&W). It is more pricey but it fits the hand well. Anyone who has ever handled/shot the Walther wants one, so see how a Walther fits your hand.
One thing is you always want a carry weapong to function, so practice a lot. Both Glock and Walther have run 100% for me. No jams, failure to feed (FTF) or failure to extract(FTE). 9mm is a good affordable round to shoot. 10mm ammo is expensive, but if you reload it drops drastically. I have loaded some stout rounds for the 10mm, and it pretty interesting to shoot. Another good round (although a little pricey) is the .357 Sig (that is what my G32 shoots).

I am almost positive Texas does not have an open-carry and the class is only $70, but I think maybe $200 to apply for the permit. I can also walk in and buy any gun so long as the FTA stuff comes back good. I might be waiting for the gun show at the end of the month anyways.

I have a ccw and I carry a glock 26 on my side ALWAY'S. It is just about the perfect size gun, go try one out you will love it.

i wouldnt go as small as a 380... lil tooooo small. 9mm is the smallest id go. kal tec? you can do better. someone mentioned xd, never shot one but they seem well built, springfeild makes some really nice firearms. I am Biased towards sigs. great guns. but a lil xpensive..... man i wish i could get a ccl. but in the county i live in. its near impossiable. you have to be a small business owner who carrys large amounts of cash, or a retired LE to get one ( rolls eyes)

I carry S&W .40... a bit on the bulky on the inside of my A* jacket...but none the less effective.

I originally wanted that S&W .40 or the Taurus that is almost identical to it. My brother had the Taurus, it was pretty nice. I actually liked it better than my other brothers Glock 22.

i have a sig .45 and i love the stopping power of a .45 but its a pain in the butt to carry on the bike. i have an "undercover" holster that normally clips to the outside of the pants but the gun itself sits inside, i just clip that to the inside of my jacket and it works ok. As far as Texas law about car being extension of the house, normally yes. the catch is it has to be NOT readily available to the driver, aka, out of the drivers arm lenth, so locked in the glove box or the trunk is how most counties interpet the law, Bexar Co.(San Antonio) though is pretty tough on it from what i hear. Best solution call your local community resource officer and ask him/her whats your counties take on carrying, can you carry in car, etc. Oh, sorry Rrasco but we dont have an open carry on pistols. Rifles, shotguns are different you can have them in plain sight but you cant have one in the chamber.

Bexar county is hard on everything. Can't you carry rifles and shotguns on a gun rack in the rear window?

Depends on what you want really. If all you care about is having a smaller gun, for ease of carry I'd suggest this North American Arms .380 ... And for those who say a .380 is too small of a round, learn to shoot properly and you won't have to worry about it. Proper placement is the key to a gun battle. That being said, I like the bigger caliber, but don't let someone talk you out of getting a smaller one. Unless we're talking .25 caliber or something.
Personally I prefer the Glock 27 in a .40 cal, it's very small and you just put it in your jacket pocket (you DO wear your leathers all the time right??) You're going to feel it if you go down no matter what, even with a chest/shoulder holster. I actually was behind my buddy when he went down, and his came loose and flew across the ground. I can't remember how he carries, but I think he had his on his hip. SigArms makes a wonderful gun as well, I'd trust theirs over just about any other for quality and how it balances in the hand. Just go to a gunshop and try out a bunch, you'll get a feel for it. Good luck.

Always. Well, not leather, but my gear anyhow. I like that .380, but the ones I have seen are actually too small. I don't like them that freakin tiny. I've been trying to go to the gun shops, but I've always had a problem getting help at them too, old f*kkers don't ever want to help a young guy. I'm going to go across town to our other Sportman's they just shut the one down that was by me. I know they have a very nice assortment of pistols there.
