CCL and Riding

I've been waiting a long time to have some money to spend on a handgun and with the stimilus checks being sent out now I am considering picking up something for me to carry.  I am not sure what I really want, either a .380 or a .40, but what I really want to know is how many of you guys that have a CCL, or not..lol, carry while riding?  I thought about carrying under my jacket, but that would just be dumb b/c if the jacket is zipped there is no access to it, plus I'm sure that would leave a nice impression say I went down.  I do have a JR Manta tank bag, I was considering putting it in there but was a little concnered about it being on the gas tank and heat etc.  I'm not too worried about it, but just wanted to get you guys' thoughts on the issue and if any of you carry while you ride, what do you carry and where do carry it?

I'm also open to suggestions on what to get, I'm unsure at this point.

Me, i would take the .40 between those 2. The tank won't get too hot but if you are looking into concealed carrying you may as well have it on your body, just incase you were to need it. It wouldn't help none in a tank bag or under a car seat or stashed in your house.

Glock 29 + shoulder strap is the way to go though ! [;)]

Glock 29 is my pref as well. Sometimes it is inside the jacket, in the car it is in the small of my back. I am thin and have a hard time concealing it anywhere else.

Go 10mm, they rule [;)]

Does the Glock 29 have a short grip?  My brother has I think a Glock 22 with the short grip, he has the mag extension, but I don't like how short the grip is on it, feels like its going to fly out of your hand.

g29 is a subcompact pistol i believe the g22 only came standard so im guess your not going to like it. Most of these concealed subcompact guns are fairly small. They are made to shoot people not target, if your looking for a practice gun get a full size 10lb chromed out blaster !! [:D]

My next gun will prob be a kel tec 9mm or kahr CW9mm they are both very small.

Have you been to any gun shops yet ?

No, not yet.  Not since I decided on the purchase anyhow.  I may stop by some on my lunch break.  I do like the idea of small for carrying, but I am going to be at the range often enough.  I am a small guy, so the smaller the better, esp when riding.  That's most of the reasoning behind wanting a .380 too, size.

Yea im also pretty small. That's why i want to get a Kel tec 9mm. They are very small and easily hidden. Once you go to a gun shop you will get a much better idea of what your really looking for. Some companies offer better packages with their guns too. Some you dont get anything, some you get a case flashlight clips all kinds of accessories.

the .380 is the perfect carry gun on a bike,as soon i get off my ass and get a ccw permit,thats what ill carry.i also have my .45 acp for the house and target shooting.

+1 on a Kel tec 9, great gun.  But i preffer my Springfield Armory XD .40 (it also comes in a compact version, and you can get a longs clip with the extension for more control if you do target shoot with it.  Springfield comes with a molded plasic holster, a 2 clip holder, 2 clips and an easy reloader for the clips.  It's an amazing gun.

in terms of carrying, i remember that one guy had some pretty good thoughts in the last post similar to this.  DONOT carry on your hip while riding, thing about it if you go down... messed up pelvis, possibly even a femur fractures.  Also, stay away from the small of the back in the pants... even worse, a broken spine...  I would definately stick to a shoulder holster worse case you break a rib..

I thought it would hurt no matter where you had it on your body if you went down.

If you go shoulder holster for riding, you need something slim. When my check comes in, I'm picking up a Kahr CW9 ($420 , 9mm, slim, and ammo is cheap to practice with) for riding and an XD9 sub compact ($500) for other times (my fiance is using her check on the XD). Take into consideration a few things before purchasing. A.) 9mm is better than a .380 both in ammo price and power. B.) You don't want your carry gun to be so big you leave it at home but so small that it breaks your hand when you shoot it. C.) Remember the cost of a holster, extra mag, cleaning kit, and break in/defense ammo in your costs. That's one of the nice things about the XD is you get a holster, extra mag, cleaning brush, lock, and mag extender for the price. The only problem I have with glock/sig/walther is the fact that they've priced themselves out of a big part of the market. There are many great guns for much less.... like the xd

See if you can find a local forum for gun owners. I see alot of good deals on the state gun site. I've seen used glock 26's/27's going for $400. Budsgunshop.com also has good deals.

Sorry to rant, but I've been doing my research since I took my CPL class.

I didn't catch if you said you had your permit or not. My permit hasn't come back from the state yet, but it should be any day now.

I do not have a permit yet, at the range I am going to get it they recommend you get certified with what you plan to carry.  So I am going to buy first, then take the class.  I won't be carrying right now, later on though.  However, I did hear rumors of a Texas law that essentially says your car is an extension of your home so you are allowed to carry a firearm in your car without a permit so long as its not on your persons.
