525 or 530 chain ?

vpb -> 525 or 530 chain ? (5/8/2008 10:20:38 PM)

Hi, I intend to replace the new sprockets ( front, rear) and chain set in my bike with 16-43-530. But I dont know whether 525 is better (adv. and disadv. ?), and if 525 is used, do the sprockets have to be changed ?

Thx for any advice !

The 525 is lighter then stock and will free up a tiny bit of power due to less rotating mass. If you change your width at all you will need to get sprockets to match. Most of us go with the 520 chain, which is the lightest you can get, but will hold up just fine.

Thank for your advice. If 520 is used, the chain's lifetime or strength will be okay ? I think it's weaker than 530.

I have a buddy that just made short work of a 520 chain & sprocket....i went with a 530 for the most possible milage.i wouldnt go lower than a 525

Thx man ! it seems that your 954 is happy with its toys. Have some unused toys to sell [;)][;)]
maybe the 530 is ok for me, for my long trips.

The stock 530 chain is i believe 12000lbs tensile strength. I just got a Driven chain in a 520 thats 14600 tensile strength. Now that cost me like an extra 40 bucks, but my point is you can get a 520 chain that is plenty, nay i say rediculously strong. Have about 2000 miles on the new chain sprocket combo and have not even needed to adjust yet, no stretch at all.

you can get differenct chains for 520.. 525.. 530 for strength and what not.. also if you are looking for longer life.. go wtih steel but then really not as much point to go to 525.. 520 ect..

@TK954RR: I see the most expensive 530 DID chain on moto-chains.com, the tensile strength is just 9760 lbs. If the stock chain has 12000lbs strength, is that DID chain is good enough ?

Most wisemen of the sportbike world will say you should not go down to a 520 on a liter bike unless the tinsel strength of the chain is greater than the stock capacity of the 530.

Look at it from two points.

1.  If you are replacing with stock geometry and simply changing the final drive ratio (gearing up or gearing down) then you should at least replace with equal or better components for 2 sub reasons; abuse and longevity.

2. If you are replacing and are considering [as bobjoe] mentioned, reducing stationary mass, which in turn lightens the bike because of less rotational mass (which in effect, gives you more acceleration in combination with a sprocket change) then you will sacrifice some longevity and durability only if you don't get a chain with a high tinsel strength.  Look for something atleast 10k lbs or better.

I have the 520 conversion with a -1,+2 configuration.  My rear sprocket is a Vortex Black anodized and I have had no problems with it thus far.  It is not elongating the teeth or wearing the inner sleeves of the links. I clean and lube the chain after every single ride and make sure that the chain is adjusted accordingly.

RCR -> RE: 525 or 530 chain ? (5/9/2008 10:45:11 PM)

It's more then enough. I run the 520 Xw-ring chain and it only rates at 8800 lbs but think about it 8,800 lbs whats that like the wieght of three cars?

There not going to put out a chain that is week and cause damage/come apart, there just going to put out lower quality that will strech out and wear faster. Tensile strength shouldn't be the issue just the brand and quality.

Hey guys, i dont want to crap on the thread, if i should make a new one please tell me and ill edit the post and make new thread(thanks!), but on the same topic, if i have a 520 with corresponding sprokets is it ok to put on a 530 chain or do the sprokets also need to be changed to match the new 530? I understand going down to a 520 from 530 will not work, just wandering if the otherway around is ok. Thanks a lot

TK954RR -> RE: 525 or 530 chain ? (5/10/2008 5:24:49 AM)

^ That is not ok, they need to match.

cool, thanks for the tip, going to be getting a new chain and sprockets soon so ill make sure they match.
