I found out tonight that the little view finder on my front brakes was not yellowed with age tonight, but instead was showing me how dirty my brake fluid was.  It took 30 minutes to bleed all the nasty stuff out, but what a difference it made!

This is the crap that came out

I see that all the time. Many people don't replace the fluid after a couple of years. It really makes a difference in how the brakes perform as well as how they provide feedback through the brake lever. Congratulations on a job well done. Would you say that it's something that most anyone could do ? How difficult compared to changing your oil ? Answers to these questions may help others decide they could tackle it too.

This morning i woke up and decided to do the rear, so i didnt feel like i did a halfa** job,  then i went for the ride.  Wow, i didnt think it'd make a big difference.  I was way off to say the least,  the braking is much smoother and tons brake power.  It took me and a friend about 30 minutes to do the front and 10 to do the back.
8mm box end wrench for the bleeder valve,
10mm whatever to take the mirrors off,
a phillips to take the windshield and the front reservoir cap,
a clean rag,
small tubing like off of a fish tank,
20oz empty coke bottle.
dot4 brake fluid i got it at auto zone
on the front start with the left side caliper first, always start farthest from the reservoir.  put the  tubing on the bleeder nipple along with the 8mm wrench, remove the windshield off and take the reservoir cap off, pump the brakes a few times and hold it in, this is where your friend opens the valve enough to release the pressure then close it back, when he does that the brake is going to drop all the way in, keep squeezeing it when it does that do not release it untill the bleeder valve has been closed. repeat untill the fluid is clear then move to the other side.  it was easy as hell, just repetative but well worth the time it took.  My braking is crisp as fut and it bites hard as hell compared to befor.

not to write a book on it or anything

That's good information. I think more people would do their own maintenance if they knew how relatively easy and inexpensive it was to do. These days it can cost hundreds of dollars to take a bike to a shop. Many times you just never know what you're getting. Congratulations on doing the complete job.

Just a tip:  get yerself a stubby screwdriver and skip the windscreen next time.  Also, when opening the bleeder valve it should be an, "open/shut" motion, all in one.

Good work, you know what?  I'm not sure there is a How-To for this... is there?  Wanna make one?

I know it's not required but I change my fluid out every time I change my brakes.  I do that in all my cars too.  I don't know why but it's real easy to do so I've always just done it that way.
