I'm looking forward to purchasing a used 2002 600f4i with 7000 miles, that my friend had sitting in his garage for almost a year.
We replaced the battery and we can get it to start with starting fluid but as soon as it's gone the bike turns off.
Can anyone give me a hand with this please??

Thanks in advance.

Bad gas, gas tank needs a douching, change plugs as stated above maybe fuel filter too.  Don't use that starting fluid too much especially if it doesn't have an upper lube in there also you may blow up the airbox. Nothing sounds too serious, enjoy the bike.

I read that starting fluid is bad for a fuel injected engine.

It is bad for any engine, but sometimes needed. Diesel engines hold up OK , but I believe valves get punished because there is not ability to lubricate them like diesel/gasoline has. Diesel and gas has additives that allow the valves and valve seats to slide a little when they impact. If not they grind and burn. Also combustion temps are different.

it's not too bad for engine to idle some time without the fuel lubrication. auto engines that use the LPG sets work FULLY without the lubrication always. but the shit happens and valves sometimes burn or stop to hold the compression..

+1

if you convert a gasoline engine to LPG, you need to change the exhaust valve seat and valve to allow for the lack of lubrication it will experience. Usually, a stellite (a cobolt-chromium possibly tungsten alloy) alloy for both.

On a side note, I usually add a bit of marvel mystery oil to the gasoline in my bike and my old vette (meant to run on leaded, still has original soft valve seats), I haven't noticed any negatives about it...any thoughts?

How would you even use starting ether on this engine?  In the ram air or directly into the intake tubes?

That's my question^

And Fish- you can do without the marvel mystery.  Doesn't that stuff gum up your insides?

Thanks everybody that answered.
I fixed the issue, it was the fuel filter that was plugged up.

The wheelie thing is kinda obnoxious at times. A kid yelled that to me at a stop sign the other day, and I yelled back "DO A BACKFLIP!"
