tecnica -> RE: need help with HID install (5/14/2008 10:47:22 AM)

the 3-prong is the signal wire. Unfortunately for the HID ballasts, the 3-prong doesn't provide enough juice for the kit. The red and black wires with circles at the end are direct line power for the HID kit. These need to be run back the the battery. I'd suggest getting some flex-tube and running it along the side of the bike under the frame. If you take the side fairings off, you'll see the power lines that came stock with the bike; just run your flex tube along this. You'll probably need to cut the circles off and go purchase some 12-AWG wire to lengthen your run to the battery. Then once you do this, your ballast will have power but will not 'fire-up' until you turn the key and it gets signal from the 3-prong. Just a heads-up: The F4 kills power to the headlight during starting. This is bad for the HID kit to turn on and a couple seconds later turn off for starting and then back on again. I'd suggest 2 different methods; one done by me and another by my buddy with the same bike. 1. Go to your local hardware store and buy a 2 prong toggle switch. When you are running your ground line, put the switch in between and drill a small hole in the side plastics next to the gauges for mounting. This way you can leave it off, flip the key, turn on the bike, then flip the switch on for the headlight. Quick and simple; just remember to flip that switch for your headlight when riding. 2. Get a time delay relay. I believe my buddy got a 30-second relay. Basically its the same installation as the toggle switch, however the relay will 'flip-on' after 30 seconds. Its a little more involved as it will be a 3-prong. 2 prongs for ground-in and ground-out (much like the toggle switch) and the 3rd prong for power which needs to run to a switched line like ignition. This way as soon as you turn the key the relay will start its countdown. Additionally! If you purchased a bi-xenon kit (meaning its one bulb that has both low and high beams) you'll need to get a spacer. The bulb itself is much longer than stock and it will scatter your beam everywhere. On the bulb itself it has your H4 base which is circular with notches. In front on the notches on that circular base, put a spacer on there. This will bring the bulb back a little and help the scatter scenario. I used a rubber o-ring I found in the plumbing aisle of my hardware store. Let me know if you need anymore help.
