So i have a 96 f3, and its being very customized. Ive hacked off the subframe, built my own, and am lookin to free up as much space as possible. Now i know on my f2, it had no fuel pump. My f3 does. I need a new petcock anyway, so could i get a petcock from an f2(no fuel pump) and eliminate the fuelpump all together, to gain some room?

if anyone wants to follow the build, its http://www.****/forums/showthread.php?t=10206

thanks!

the F3 fuel system needs the fuel pump, otherwise it wouldnt have it. Its not that big, shouldnt be a problem to fit it in there.

the f3 needs the fuel pump if you plan to ride hard. if you putt around without ever going wide open throttle or high revving then you can get by with removing it

well it wont be a put machine, but i def dont race. would the carbs off an f2 work with the ram air setup from the f3? im still wondering why put a fuel pump on the f3 as opposed to the f2, when all they added was ram air and like a few hp

right, new design carbs with more power, require a slight pressure to them to feed fuel. Some carbs needs pumps, some dont, thats just how they are designed.

I have seen different responses to this question.  Some people have no problem without the pump.  I personally had problems without it at high rpms.  It seemed worse as the fuel level went down also.

I'm fairly new around here, just bought a '96 F3 in the last month, and have been lurking for a while.

Anyway, as I understand it a ram air system allows more air to flow into the carbs, and consequently can use/draw more fuel than a comparable system without the ram air. In my mind this explains the need for the fuel pump on F3s and lack of a pump on the F2s. I believe this is similar to when a turbo is added to a carbed engine. When the turbo forces more air into the carb, it also creates an increased need for fuel. Without proper(enough) fuel pressure the engine will starve for fuel.

Anybody please feel free to confirm this theory or correct if I'm wrong.

with turbocharged/supercharged FI engines you need more fuel too, solution for that is bigger injectors, or more injectors(IE. supplementary injectors). I had to go through this when i built a turbo kit for my car.

solution to this problem, bypass the pump and disconnect it. If it works, great, it works. If it doesnt work good enough, you need it.
less talk more action!..lol
