tripicana -> 87 Hurricane build <fairings anyone?> (5/11/2008 11:00:15 PM)

hello all,
I''''ve finaly dedicated my time and resources to the reconstruction of my 1987 CBR600 Hurricane.  The project began almost a year ago as a mostly complete, backet case bike.  I went through it, got the engine running, and its been taking up space in the garage since.  I completely stripped it down, and will swap everything over to a titled frame.

I all ready have alot of questions, and i will try to keep them in this post.

I was thinking of media blasting my rims, will the bare aluminum be a problem?
unfinished spokes with a polished lip, will it need to get clearcoated?

here she is, awaiting assembly

zoop seal work good on bare aluminum I thought, kinda whats its intended for.  is that a cb1 next to the hurricane, or a hawk?  looks like a project all right :)

at least you don't have that infamous crack in the frame.

tripicana -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (5/12/2008 1:21:51 PM)

cbreric - the bike is a 96 CB750 Nighthawk

the frame does have the crack, it will get welded this week.

cbreric -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (5/12/2008 5:10:20 PM)

nice bikes then :)  good luck with the weld!

tripicana -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (8/6/2008 10:19:49 AM)

could someone measure the distance between the ground and bottom of the oil sump, with the bike straight up?  i''m going to build a stand to lift the bike high enough to have the wheels just off the ground.  i got sidetracked, but did get new tires, powdercoated the rims, polished the forks, and found the missing parts it needs.
ill post pics once i get a rolling bike.

tripicana -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (brake shims) (8/11/2008 3:55:21 PM)

i am missing the front brake rotor dampening shims, will fiber washers from the hardware store be fine?

Billistic -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (brake shims) (8/14/2008 10:34:56 PM)

I think so, I''ve read of others doing so. The washers are pretty thin ( almost useless IMO ) but they put them there for some reason. I put a set of good used rotors on recently and reused the old washers with no problems

tripicana -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (brake shims) (8/15/2008 1:54:29 PM)

cool, i went ahead and ordered some oem shims.  i figured they were pretty thin and couldn''t really find anything localy.

rrasco -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (brake shims) (8/15/2008 2:40:33 PM)

aghhhh!  you paid for those damn things?  My dad found some at some store, he bought a handful of them for $1.  I wasn''t paying OEM prices for them.

tripicana -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (brake shims) (8/29/2008 6:55:05 AM)

this weekend i''''m going to go through my carbs and clean them up.  i have two different sets and looking for advice on which to use.  the first is the stock carbs for the 87-89 model vg20a, the second is for the 1990 model vg26f.  the later has an increased throttle valve diameter of .5mm.  will this give me any performance gain?  i''''m leaning toward the vg26f since i live at 6600 ft and need all the air i can get.  someone replaced the main jets from a the stock 110 to 112, should i go back to stock since my elevation?  i have a new stock airfilter, and will be using a yoshi header and silencer.

also, i will probably need to have my carbs sync''''d eventualy.  i have a carb airflow meter that i''''ve used to sync dual two barrel carbs on my volkswagen.  it goes over the intake, and measures airflow through the carb.  will this be as good as measuring at the vacume ports?  here is a pic of the tool i have.

i have made been making some progress on the bike.  last week i got the wheels and suspension on.  i also went through the wiring harness since it was rolled in electrical tape and found and fixed about 6 chaffed wires.  my main goal is to have this bike running by the end of the summer.  i think i will make it since i have almost a month left.  here is how she sits now.

Damn. you keep doing this right and that gonna be one sweet ride

MachZR2 -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (brake shims) (8/29/2008 6:52:36 PM)

I would go with the carbs from the ''90 model.  I had a ''90 once upon a time.  Supposedly they had 10 more HP from the factory than the previous years, due to the different carbs and a different cam profile.

BTW, I have a brand new, unused, still shrink wrapped UNI foam air filter that would drop in very nicely in place of the stock filter.  Can can be cleaned and reused over and over, so you don''t have to buy an OEM one ever again.  Cheap too = $10.00

tripicana -> RE: 87 Hurricane build (brake shims) (8/30/2008 12:29:49 AM)

cool, i think i will be going with the ''90 carbs.  still wondering if the air flow meter tool i have will work to sync the carbs?  and should i leave the jetting alone, or go back down to the 110s?

Not sure if your airflow meter will work, it might be good enuf to get by.  I''ve always used vacuum guage to set sync.  As far as jetting goes, probably will be ok to be on a 120, ''specially if you go with the UNI filter, cause it will flow a little more air.  And these bikes came jetted pretty lean from the factory.  If I was doing it, I would leave it until the bike is done, ride it, check your plugs to see what kind of color you get, then go from there.  Its not that hard to yank the carbs and swap jets, benn there, dun that.
