my 88 project cleanup!

cbreric -> my 88 project cleanup! (5/13/2008 6:48:29 PM)

well, it started with the bike being handed down to me for nothing. seems liek a good deal :) I cleaned the carbs (SEVERE NEGLECT! VERY DIRTY!) put in new plugs (the ends were actually disintegrating lol!) and it ran pretty decent. so now this spring I decided that haveing to cut a million zip ties to get to everything was silly so I set out to remedy that by repairing the old plastics. here are teh before and after pics. the whole process is in the photobucket album linked below.  almost done, need to get the front fender white adn the top of the tank red and it will be done for now... redoing it again next winter once I am satisfied the panels wont fly off going down the road.  not too bad for spray paint!

oh, and I got a corbin seat for it from abay for $10!  more pics coming as I finish it up.

dalex -> RE: my 88 project cleanup! (5/14/2008 7:12:04 AM)

Well, tha't a surprise! I was under the impression that the red/black theme was the RESULT of your cleaup, not the 'before' condition.. hehe. Nice work, I wish mine was that clean

rrasco -> RE: my 88 project cleanup! (5/14/2008 8:05:32 AM)

What were you doing in this pic?

cbreric -> RE: my 88 project cleanup! (5/14/2008 9:17:21 AM)

the red and black was ROUGH!  not NEARLY as shiny as it looks in the pic at all. the white was brought on because I bought the mirrors on ebay so I could actually see behind me, and decided to paint the rest lol!  and in the pic with the string, I was repairing cracks and that held the cracks together while the jb weld cured.  worked pretty well actually :)  all teh new tabs are made from a sheet of metal. I cut small squares, cleaned the area well and used jb weld again. I tried to break them off after and it really took some effort, should hold pretty well :)  heres hoping at least lol!

rrasco -> RE: my 88 project cleanup! (5/14/2008 11:34:53 AM)

Cool.  I was thinking you were doing something of the sort.  Thanks for the idea on the tabs, I have a few that need fixing and I was thinking of using washers and a jb weld or some other sort of epoxy.  My dad says 3M has some really cool shit that he sells I may use.

redzintimidator -> RE: my 88 project cleanup! (5/14/2008 5:10:01 PM)

that red and black looks like a clone of one of the f3 guy's bike...or is the f3 a clone..hmm...

either way looks good man!

dalex -> RE: my 88 project cleanup! (5/14/2008 8:14:09 PM)

Did you decide to not put back the sprocket cover or is it just temporary?

danothedinosaur -> RE: my 88 project cleanup! (5/14/2008 11:17:19 PM)

Looks good! I'm in the middle of rebuilding the plastic on mine.

A couple questions. I'm trying to track down all the hardware (nuts, bolts, fasteners) for the plastic on the bike without shelling out big bucks. Anyone know a good place to find this stuff?

Also, what kind of prep do you need to do in order to paint the plastic and tank? Do you need to strip it all or can you prime over top of the old paint?

Cheers.

cbreric -> RE: my 88 project cleanup! (5/15/2008 5:15:12 AM)

I stripped the paint from the sprocket cover and now its nicely polished. did the same with the gas cap, came out pretty nice :)  more pics to come :)  and thanks for the compliments guys!

cbreric -> RE: my 88 project cleanup! (5/15/2008 5:21:36 AM)

oh, and I just went to the harware store and got bolts etc.  and I sanded the old paint, used primer, and painted. I want to strip ALL of it this winter because it is so thick in places that I actually had to use filler in places!   no idea how to strip it without hurting the plastic though.
