No, but it is a good idea. If you're going to do it while moving, dont look for it, feel for it.

While I'll agree its better to stop to do it, you can't always do it safely, sometimes your just in a situation where your better to switch over as you go. Practice, practice.

No, you don't have to stop to switch. The fuel valve is just a simple valve, turning it means you just close one path and open another. So as far as doing anything to cause damage while turning the fuel valve while running the bike and moving...no. But like everyone else said is right, If you have to look and search for it to be able to switch. By all means stop before you run into something. Soon you'll get use to it, and you'll just know where your valve is and you'll just be able to do it like second nature without having to even really feel for it.

I have no problem just reaching down and turning it when I feel the fuel running out ... I am very familiar with my bike though so know exactly where to find it .. sometimes I am in places where it would be more dangerous to stop ..

follw the directions from all the above and remember it's extra tricky while white lining. i would say you dont have to stop but by all means use every resource you have to get to a safer situation before you start reaching. or you could go out to the garage and get familiar with it right now!!

The first time I had to pull over, didn't know where it was.  Second time no traffic and I looked while riding.  Third just felt for it, once founded gave it a turn.  Fourth, just reached and turned.

Can you see the trend?  Practice makes perfect, well doing it makes perfect.

I ride one handed most of the time so it's no big deal just to reach down and flip the petcock to reserve.

i switch on the go when i can. Of course i usually run out of gas sitting at a light and when the light goes green, i twist the throttle and stall....annoying sitting there for a moment cranking while the gas catches back up.

Learn when it is without looking. While riding, practice finding it occasionally, look hard to do, swing your left out a linch and reach down there.

also prolly a good idea to check your fuel level before you start riding and hit up a gas station before you have to use reserve
