Gas cap removal

How do you remove the ring part of the gas cap, from the locking part?

I know how to get the gas cap off the the tank. That's not a problem. I just have to switch the ring. I've striped a couple of the cosmetic bolts, and need a replacement.

TIA

Hmmm, not to sure without looking at mine in the open. Sure you don't have enough clearance to put a longer bolt in and nut it? Otherwise there's always JB weld, the bolt isn't functional and all you see is the head. Just epoxy it in place and never touch it again.

The problem with using epoxy is that I would like the option of taking the mount off and on. Using a nut under the ring and a bolt on top, I never thought about it. ANd That still doesn't help if the mmount is removed.

Now are we talking about one of the many useless bolts that go around the ring, or one of the three that actually hold the assembly down?

The two that I've striped are to of the useless ones. The camera mount hooks up to the front three. The middle is one that holes it down and the other two are useless. The useless one's are the ones that are striped

I would like to replace the ring, so that I can use the camera mount, and beable to take it off with out have to holes open to the gas tank.

It should be just a pin hinge.  Try using a punch, I know I remember seeing a pin inside there when I have removed them to paint tanks in the past.

Probably ahve to set the cap in a vice and punch the pin out.  Prolly similar to reinstalling it.

Thanks kid that tip helped. Now i've got the new gas cap on it's way from ebay.

To prevent from striping the new ring, what type of screws did you use (kid)?

I bought some bolts that I thought were the same diameter, and thread depth, but I guess I was wrong. I think the screw was too strong, and the aluminum in the ring was too weak.

Thanks again
