I've been looking on here for how to prime your brake lines the old fashioned way and all I can find is people talking about it. So I've been googling several different things and finally came across Russells website and it says you have to prime it the old fashioned way with an eyedropper or small syringe. So let me make sure this is right I just unscrew the new SS lines from the MC and suck up some fluid into the eyedropper and squeeze it into the line? I'm going to walmart to get a dropper I'll see if they have a mitivac thing that everyone always talks about but probably not.

bleeding empty lines suck. you should invest in the vacuum pump. speedbleeders work great but need the lines already primed with pressure in them to work at all. you will still need to prime via the old fashioned way or via pump...the new skool way.

speedbleeders work great to bleed the brake of old fluid while adding new on there. the pump is too fast on this one. speedbleeders are useless for priming the lines

I can leave the speedbleeders on there though right? Otherwise how would you get them on without draining all of the fluid then refilling it? I can't see people just ripping the line off covering it with their finger then putting it back on. /shrug

Well, of course can you leave the speedbleeders on.  It would defeat the purpose if you took them off.  Just make sure they don't leak (some of the off-brands do sometimes... I had to replace two of the ones I bought once).

How in the world do I get the fluid to start flowing through the brake lines with no vac? All I have is brake fluid, wrenches, brake lines, and hands. =(

I awesome your trying to bleed the brakes?  If I'm not mistaken speedbleeders are an aftermarket purchase, so if your running a stock setup you wouldn't have to worry about them.  I would recommend pulling the bleeder valve out and throwing teflon tape on the threads before you start.  Alot of times you get air seeping pass the threads when when you open them

You can go the old fashion way of just pumping the brake, hold the lever down and open the valve.  Repeat until there's no air in the line.  Usually start with the caliber furthest from the master cylinder.

I just bleed the front brakes on my bike and used a vaccum pump.  I think it was like $20.  You basically fill the reservoir and then pump until a vaccum is created, open the valve let the fluid bleed out.

For some reason it seems like a get a much stiffer brake lever when I bled the brakes the old school way, but I've heard a few others with 1000RR have a soft brake lever.  Might just be the master cyclinder.

good luck

Well, finally got it. I read on here Woody said to bleed the MC so I did that a few times, came back in the house looked on the internet went back out did it a few more times and after oh ..... 4 hours total I think the lines are installed! lol Why do I even try anymore.... why? Pics are on the sights and sounds thread. Oh yea and I read a lot of people are saying zip tie the brake lever? Well I just parked it in the garage and "watch tied" the brake lever. hahahaha I don't have zip ties or rubber bands but I have my running watch! It's the most use it has gotten in months! Why do that though?

I see you got them working finally..

there are several claimed reasons on why to zip tie the lever, whatever it actually is, it works.  It causes the lever to feel more solid when apply the brakes, instead of a little mushy.   My lever is like hitting a wall.

oh good, you figured it out...

invest in the mity vac next time mang!

the zip tie is supposed to force the air up into the MC or something like that. if you still have the stock set up, you should the upper banjo bolt with a bleeder screw on it! yes they make it like that...if your line doesn't come with it.

yeah, an upper bleeder valve would be nice on the mc, but I make due without it.

Don't get down on yourself man, priming brakes without tools just takes FOREVER.  Very frustrating if you weren't expecting it

Now you know, though, and now you know what to do next time.

I had an extra PITA when I did the XR because the front line they sent me was just a tad too long... which meant I didn't have the help of gravity for the most part...

(need to get me some more tools, too)

If I want to firm up my brakes can I just zip tie it or do I need to re-bleed them and then zip tie it?

You'll need to bleed them because that's the only way to get the air out of the lines. About the SS lines now, I honestly don't notice a difference. They are just as soft and mush as the old OEM lines that I had on there. =( They just look cooler. lol

well...technically, you shouldn't be able to tell the difference unless you're doing constant hard braking, like at the track or the twists. when the fluid heats up, the lines don't expand as much as the old rubber lines. they still do expand some but very little since the rubber lines are wrapped in SS sleeving, preventing them from expanding.

my buddy did ss lines and his was very firm, but mine weren't ever firm like his, even after much bleeding.

i would totally recommend swapping out to a different MC though...my experience with radial types is that they provide more 'feel'....not necessarily better breaking, but better feel...like i can tell what my brakes are doing, etc.

i have never really likes the brakes on my f4i. they have always been to soft and squishy and i never thought i could stop fast enough if i needed to. however, with some of the stuff i have done recently, i have gotten them perfect, and finally did a stoppie for the first time, which is proof to me that my brakes can work as hard as they need to. heres some advice i can give:

i swapped from the stock lines to stainless about 2 months ago and didnt notice any difference really. pissed, i got some speedbleeders. not sure if you have speedbleeders or not, but the threads on my stock bleeder valves would always leak a little bit, no matter how much teflon i used. i got some speedbleeders for the ease of bleeding, but the sealer they have on the threads works far better then teflon tape does. then there is bleeding, which is often the cause of a soft lever. bleed the left side, then the ride side, then the left side again. i pump 2 master cylinders of fluid through at each side to make sure there are no air bubbles. with the zip tie/watch band around the brake lever, get it as tight as you can, and let it sit over night. since our bikes have adjustable brake levers, i have mine set to the absolute maximum distance out it can go, so that i have the most distance for my lever to travel.

i think the speedbleeders were what really fixed my problem, when combined with proper bleeding. they are pretty hard to get into calipers, assuring that they fit tight and wont leak. hope this helps some!

that stuff they use for the threads on the speedbleeders can be bought from them. i bought some when i got my speedbleeders. mike does have them, they work well but suck hard for the bleeding process.

teflon gets eaten up by gasoline and by brake fluid...not to use on either...F4i brakes can stop but feel isn't so hot.

anyone get kevlar lines? look pimp...
