valve shim kit?

all the bike shops near me said i need to buy each shim individually but i found a kit with 141 shims in it by hot cams. i have a 91 honda cbr 33,000 miles anyone have any shm kits with everything i need and any advice for doing it on the f2?

I will need to do the shims on my bike this summer, but I'm wondering if the kit will actually have what you need. It appears you get all sizes, but with 16 valves and only 3 shims of each size, I'd be worried that you'll still be ordering singles. Of course, any you replace could be put back into somewhere else.

the vavle adjustment procedure is on pages 3-5 to 3-9 in the service manual. sorry i couldnt copy and paste it. the shims for the intake and exhaust are different sizes. unless you have beat the living shit out of the bike not all of the shims will need to be replaced. and being that they have all worn individually, the sizes will probably be different. dont quote me tho cause your bike might need all of them changed !!

Im not to worry to have to buy singles really i just wanna get it done pretty much.. but i dont want the shims to not match at all if i get a kit... it says there 7.48 diameter so which side does that fit? http://www.procycle.us/hotcams/valve_shims.htm thats what im looking at pretty much. i just want to avoid going to the store a ton of times... or if someone can give me a basic of what shims are usaully needed (i know every bike should be different)

$80. Hmmm. Whats it cost to get it done by someone else? Its something that isn't done that often. Like synching the carbs. The tool is ~$100 and it only cost ~$80 to get it done by the dealer. I haven't checked on the valve adjustment. I have just over 14k on my f2. It should be done, but I am lazy.

I think the recommendation is at like every 16,000 miles, but seeing that our bikes are 14+ years old I would venture a guess that less than 16 would also be a good idea. I bought my bike last year with 28 on it and have like 32+ now. Don't know if it was ever done so I'm going to do it this year as I hear some ticking while riding. I know I need to do the CCT and will do that first to see if that helps anything.

Mike, I think our bikes are pretty much on the same page. Mine has 32 or 33 thousand miles on it right now. I'd like to do the valve adjustment but right now I have mono so its hard for me to get to the garage. I installed the manual CCT and it pretty much fixed any valve related issues. The fact remains though I'd still like to check all the clearances. I also will be doing a carb sync but I will be building my own tool for that. I'm not sure on this but I think you are supposed to adjust the valves before syncing the carbs so that the vacuum measurements are correct. If I get around to doing any of these things I will try and write up how-to's with pictures as well. I think the proper procedure for the valves is to measure every one of them first, then calculate the new shim size you will need and go buy all of the shims you need at once. I had previously thought about getting the kit, but I will probably only need to do it once and don't need to have a shim kit lying around taking up space. I'm guessing shims from a dealer are a couple bucks a piece.

In the service manual is a good write up on how to do the job. Basically if you have the shims, do them as you rotate the engine and measure. The critical part seems to be that the engine temperature must be cool. IIRC it was like less than 90, but could be off by 10 or so. I know it did not say 100*. I know that the valve cover on my engine leaks slightly at the plugs because when I last pulled them I found some oil where the plug would seat. None on the end of the plug though so I was advised to leave it alone. I'll have to pony up the $$$ when it's shim time though.[:'(]

haha, damn right, the women hear that fine running engine and it just gets them so hot and bothered. Too bad they got diseases like mono that kick your ass for a week...
