Does tire size affect speedo?

ballintbones50 -> Does tire size affect speedo? (5/15/2008 8:00:50 PM)

I went from a 160/60ZR17 to a 180/55ZR17.

Does anyone know if the change in tire size would affect the speedometer?

It feels like I'm going 60mph when the speedometer is telling me 70mph.

Maybe its just me but if anyone has any info, that would be sweet.

Thanks

yes n the bike wont turn in as easy anymore or make it handle even worse if the tire is on a wheel not meant for a 180 as it will completely change the profile of the tire. And all that all depends on how you ride.

Yes but your new tire size is only 3 millimeters bigger overall diameter than the old one.. It will actually be the other way around though, where the speedo will say you are going slower than you actually are

3mm's is negligible.  You'd get more inaccuracies from just riding the bike and wearing down the tire.  It's all in your head, get a speedohealer if you feel the speedometer is off by more than what you're comfortable with.

I also have the 180 on my bike, I rode up on the new Honda Civics with that big digital dash and I saw the driver was doing 80 and so was I.

When I do 65 it feels like I am going much slower, I don't feel speed unless I doing over 80 mph.   But, as for the misses who just started riding feel like 65 is going to fast.

Just like it was stated, it is all in the mind of the rider.

doesn't the speedo go off the front wheel??

your RPM would change based on the size of the rear tire, but not the speedometer, no?

+1 to the wider rear causing slower turn-in.  the track riders I have talked to prefer a 160/60 (this is on the 5" rim though)

You're thinking F2.  The F3's speedos go off the trans.

i got a 170/60 on rear and im short, so could i get a 170/50 or less to lower it a little w/o sacrificing handling. does anyone know where the post is that explains the effects of a bigger or smaller tire, or maybe let me know the deal.
