engine problem?

socnty -> engine problem? (5/22/2008 9:48:44 AM)

just bought a 99 f4. starts fine and rev's fine under no load. when i'm riding though, it feels like it's missing up to around 4-4500 rpms (in all gears), above 4500 rpms the engine sounds smooth again. my problem seems like a variation of other posts i've read, with the solution being carb cleaning and or spark plug replacement

do you guys think it's a more serious problem that i should take to the dealer? or do you think a carb cleaning will do the trick?

thanks for all your input!

Welcome to the forums!

About your bike, assuming you're hearing no odd noises, my best guess from the information given is that your carbs need to be synchronized.  I'm thinking it probably starts fine and maybe idles a bit rough (as a newbie you may not be catching that) and then as the carbs are opened up, they are running more efficiently, hence, "sounding smooth again."

But, if you're saying you can rev it up to say 5K rpms in neutral and it throttles fine... ?  Is that what you're saying?  Then when it's in gear it boggs down?

Kinda hard to tell I guess from what you've said but sure seems like it's probably not running as smooth as you think at idle.

FWIW, I couldn't forsee any major engine issues from the problem you've described, rest easy [;)].  Good luck!

thanks for the reply!

yes, when i rev the engine in neutral/clutch deployed, it sounds smooth like a humm....

but when i put it in gear it feels like it's missing or hesitating until i reach about 4-4500 rpms...

while at idle it sounds smooth and revs smooth but the tach moves from 1000 1200 rmps by itself.

i have a home made 2 carb synch, can i synch the carbs in pairs then alternate the paring? hope that makes sense...
