To me, the point of the Harley is not to ride it, but to be seen riding it.

+1 on that, Paco - it's almost like the Big Bad Harley has become a fashion accessory.......
Harley people here are mostly very well off financially, and the days of the "bad boy" riding a chopped Harley are long gone (although they still like to think they're "badass")
I stopped on the way back from a rally recently and there was a Harley owner on his cellphone to the dealer, complaining about a "grinding noise from under the bike" - turned out he hadn't lubed his chain in about 3 months (!!!) -I Borrowed a paintbrush and painted chain with 40wt oil while he pushed it - no more noise - maybe he'll wave at sportsbike riders in future (although I doubt it)

That's right, shadow!! I almost forgot!
My mind must be trying to block it out. Still can't believe she said it.

Thought Harleys stopped using chains in the mid 80's? Started again?

They are poser bikes. I used to have a Valkyrie (24yo on a Valkyrie, yay), of the first models ever made (No. 7) , mega comfy but you could still ride it hard, could get the front wheel up in the right conditions, used to scape it heaps but it had so much low down donk it would catch up to the sportbikes coming out of the corners:)

Regret selling it but with all cruisers they are not very practicle, especially around town and it cost more to run than my dam car:P

The "thing" had a front end off a Suzuki and a load of other "bolt on bling"- but yes, running a chain drive. Seemed odd to me at the time, too - maybe it was a lot older than it looked ?
(when painting his chain with oil, he was more concerned with getting oil on his chrome than he was about the chain !!!) Takes all kinds, I guess.....
And you can't compare a Valkyrie to a Hardly Dangerous - not in the same class in any way - my mate owned one, and it was a great bike, unlike his Harley, which was always in pieces......

The best things about the H-D's is all the ACCESSORIES!!

People that had a Harley, once, 40 years ago and still have the engine case in their basement still wear the t-shirt, the belt buckle, the boots, the jacket, the hat, the other hat, the other other hat, the other belt buckle, the big belt buckle, the REALLY big belt buckle, the jacket and, oh yeah, the underwear. And of course, they have the decals on their H-D pickup truck.

I swear more Harley riders drive pickup trucks then ride on two wheels.

kdjack,
Use a hairdryer. They'll peel right off. You can use a heat gun, too, but on really low setting and far away.
I guess the yellow would come off like the others. Not sure why not. I've contemplated taking the yellow off, too, many times. Just haven't been able to commit to it.

All, that was the most entertaining thread I've read in a long time.  Wish I could get on more regularly to participate.  I've, frankly, never understood the need to buy any bike and not ride, much less something like an H-D.  I just take my truck out a couple of times a week to the grocery store to keep the seals lubed.  Safe riding, as always, and happy bitching with other bikers.

Well,
In trying to expand my horizons (and since Jules seems to like Harley dirtbags and not CBR1000F's) I decided to ride with them...
Where better to really soak in the Harley attitude than a Veterans ride.
This was truly a sea of chrome. I was MAYBE 1 sport in 500 cruisers. I started about 1/4mile from the lead, and walked almost the whole line of 2,200 bikes. There was 1 (yes one) other CBR. Not a 1kf, but a CBR.

Here I am on the line:

Here's me, right next to my new friends! (I'm taking the pic, not IN the pic) :

And another:

And one side of the lot (look! another sportyish bike!):

In all seriousness, though, we raised over $55,000 for the Veteran's hospital. Good turnout, and had a good time. I actually rode with the guy I was talking about earlier who NEVER rides. This was the first time I ever actually saw him on his bike. I had to line up late (work), and he saved me a spot up front with him!! Made for a much nicer ride for me.
He kept talking about the guys in his chapter stopping to eat at a steakhouse on the way back, and how I could ride along if I wanted. I figured "what the hell", and they ended up stopping at a Ruby Tuesday!! HA HA. A bunch of bikers in Harley gear with leather vests and bandanas (and me) walking into a damn Ruby Tuesday was freakin' hilarious. I gave them so much $hit.
Then, when I got to work on Monday, I realized that this guy went around telling everyone my bike broke down half way throught the ride. So people kept coming up to me at work, asking what was wrong with it....
All back to normal, now.

Nice work on the fundraising - the veterans surely will be grateful.
If I were to ride with the Harleys (ugh) I'd overheat from the high ego's and low speeds...he he

I don't think that many of the new school Harley guys do any of their own wrenching. They've got the money to have the dealers do that for them.

I heard somewhere that Harley was now making vacuum cleaners.
The only product they make that doesn''t suck.

Q: You know the difference between a Harley and a Hoover?

A: The position of the dirtbag!

True enough, Paco, most of the new ones do, but when it breaks down on the road, they''re helpless

Howdy all!

Well, here''s my story...

Early reding season last year I purchased a 1977 Harley - Not running - My 1st bike....  I rode her hard for the entire season.  I started blowing smoke and oil out of the rear cylinder and was going to rebuild her my self.
