I have a 06 cbr 1000. I'm thinking about doing down (-1) on the front sprocket. Has anyone done this if so how do you like it.

On my 05, I went up 2 in the rear. Going down 1 in the front is equal to about 2 1/2  up in the rear. Your bike should benifit about the same as mine did.....and  I like it. It gives the bike more usable and more noticable power. It only changes the rpms by a few hundred. But it really woke up my 05. If you don't get a speedo healer, your going to be running about 63 mph speedo when your actually doing about 55. the fudge factor is raised a bit.

But, well worth it.

Have done that mod on every single bike i have ever owned, and will do it on any new one i ever get. IMO best mod you can ever do, and one of the cheapest.

I went +2 on the rear of my 06'' also.  It really was a good mod.   I was able to keep the same chain also.  Anymore than +2, and I am sure you''ll need a longer chain.   I really need a speedo healer though.  I only had 1500 miles on the bike when I did the mod.  Now, its showing 7500.

yes this will cause you to rack up the miles faster, unless you have a speedo healer.a

do it.  i went -1 in the front and the bike was way better all over the rpm.

the original drive 16/42 = 2.625
-1  drive 15/42 = 2.8

this is a 6.25 reduction, not really adding that many more miles to me

Bishop WOW you were able to go up 2 without changing the chain?

Yep, I was able to keep the same chain.  I actually found out I could keep the same chain by a link I found on here.  It moves the front tire further foward about a half inch or so.  But, to anyone that does this mod, be careful.  I just had new tires put on my bike.  I guess the guys at that shop weren''t smart enough to know the chain is suppose the have 1.25" of slack.  Evedently, they were trying to get the blocks to line up with the adjustment marks on the swingarm.  But, since the tire is moved foward, it is just ahead of the first mark when the chain is adjusted properly.  I left the shop and the bike was making a funny humming sound.  The chain was the first thing I checked.  And, it was tight as a banjo string.  I had to fix it when I got home....

06 is already +1 in the rear from the 05.

I was really nervous about going -1 (front) on my 06. I was afraid that it would be revving too high for my taste, especially since I am on the interstate alot.

I am so glad I did it! So much fun! average interstate speeds still keep me at around 5k rpm (which is perfect for the charging system on the CBR''s) and the first 3 gears are SO much more fun now!

Get a speedohealer.

The only sprocket that I have heard bad things about is Vortex. I know a lot of people swear by Driven and AFAM. I got my setup through CycleGear.

I got a DRIVEN rear sproket Aren.  Yes, it should fit on your 06'' 1000 rr without any problems.  My bike was pretty much stock when I got it.  I can''t remember exactly where I got it.  I believe it was Superbike Supply.   I was going to get an AFAM sproket.  I was just going to get a steel sproket.  I know most peolpe upgrade to aluminum.  But, I had heard that they wear out quicker.  So, I just went with steel.  But, the sales rep informed me that AFAM didn''t make a 44 tooth "steel" sproket.  Thats why I went with a Driven sproket. It has been on the bike nearly 2 years and looks fine....

i would not waste the money and effort to do it.  i did a little test today with my hand held gps.  speedo indicated top speed of 103 on the way to work and held at 100 for a half mile or so be sure sure it took.  got to work looked at gps, 99.3 was the max speed on the gps.  not enough error for me to drop the ca$h and time to install a healer. plus it is just one more electronic thing to act up.

Then you didn''t change your gearing or your method was incorrect (I am NOT trying to be rude)

If I remember correctly, it was about 10% off after going -1 (ie. 7 mph off at 70 mph).
I am going by memory right now, but I did verify mine with a GPS at the time and it was connected to no less than 5 satellites.

no offense taken, i am always looking to learn.

i definatly changed the gears, i am down one in the front and still stock 42 in the rear.  yes i did buy the bike new so i am the only one who has touched it.

as far a method.
all i can tell you is i turned on my Garmin eTrex before i left the house made sure it had picked up signal before i shoved it into my pocket and left for work. no idea how many satellites it looks for, if i remember correct it shows 4 on the screen.  i get onto the eway at one point and was able to have enough space to wind it up a bit, held at speed to try and be sure it picked up correctly.  when i got here i looked at the max speed.  not really sure how else to change that method.  i have been trying to see where i could attach it to the bike so i did not have to put in my pocket or try and hold it in my hand.

when i did the change the gear i did anticipate error.  i figured it would be what i changed the ratio by 6.25%.  so at 100 i should be off by about 6mph

all things have some kind of error.   i am sure my speedo is not 100% accurate, and i know the gps has error.  i have seen it indicate that it is only accurate up 50 feet or so at times based on the signal it is receiving.  i will try a follow up run to verify my results

o.k. did test #2 today.  with gps in hand and watching as i carefully road along.  ( two laners this time not the eway. )  early sunday is a good time due to less cagers.

anyway, noted 61 on my speedo, and 56 on the gps.  more in line with onarom.  but still have no idea of how accuracte the gps is.  did a test against my buddies stock gixer.  he was showing 3 to 4 mph higher than the gps with an indicated 50 on his speedo.  i was showing 53 to his 50.

just a little more info for you all.
