as far as your question on Icon, some see it as poser wear and poor quality. I''ve bought some and it''s hit or miss. Some of it is good others not, I do think however their products are getting much better.
As far as gear, their are lots of good brands, and fit it important. Jeans are NOT gear. Get good boots, some riding leather pants a good leather jacket, gauntlet style gloves, and a DOT lid. My stuff consists of Cortech, Oxtar, Held gloves, Shift jacket, and an Arai helmet.
As for lids, determine what your headshape is for fitting. Then go to a shop and try on some lids of appropriate sizes. Don''t buy a lid over the net without knowing you have tried that model and size on first somewhere else. More expensive helmets are great, but as long as it''s DOT it will meet the safety requirements. PRices go up when you pay for lighter helmets, more features (venting, removable pads) and fancy graphics.
I had a long post about starting small but I am not going to bother posting that and loosing my breath. Budget a good 600-1000 bucks for gear I say, you can do it for less too buying closeout gear as well. THey are deals to be had.

ok looking over your list.
I''ll mention some things that were not in my last post in regards to your gear wants.
Your boots needs to ideally be A) over the ankle protection B) no laces.
Your ankles are complicated and laces get caught on stuff ie. your shifter. In fact a sales guy I knew who was just moving bikes between a lot got his shoelace around the shifter and dropped a brand new bike someone was coming to pick up.... Alpinestars and Scorpions are a good brand.

Check out newenough.com closeout section. I wouldn''t go crazy and get a bunch of highend stuff to start, mostly because you don''t know what you really need until you get into it, I say just get a decent leather jacket, gloves, good jeans (I know they don''t do anything but better than shorts) and I just wear combat boots from the surplus store. I have had head to toe gear (suits, boots, gloves, back protector) and I have been on the track and crashed in a cheap Teknic leather suit, sidi boots, speedmaster gloves, back protector and that saved my life, but it''s not practical for me to commute to work and weekend rides. You have to balance safety with usability at some point. Just my $.02

And I would suggest an SV650 as a starter, Vtwin, 75hp, very forgiving and no 9K rpm rush of power to get you in trouble.
