Looks great, Ara !
Maybe if you buff it, it would shine up nicely........?
Funny, my 180 never chews up the chainguard.......

What is the biggest tire we can fit on our bikes? My ''''91 has a 170 - can I go larger (i.e. 180) on a stock rim?

(EDIT) Wow, I can actually post on the forum again!

Hi,
A 180/55 will work fine, but as I say, for me the chainguard wore through. You can bend the small posts that the guard mounts to if you find it does rub, but I decided on the stainless one. You MAY find the bike a little slower to "fall into" a corner, but its hardly noticeable to me....

The 180''s are definately easier to find where I live, and there is much more choice too...

+1 Ara, everyone''s using 180''s now as the 170''s are hard to find (especially here) and a LOT more expensive. Don''t go bigger than 180, Amac, or your handling will suffer - see earlier posts on this one.

Nice mod, how difficult will be to have it looking great, I mean, the plastic ones barely always look clean, now I guess you must use stainless stell or aluminum for those, what material should be better to use?

Hi,
This is an "off the shelf item" available from a German supplier you can find on good ''ol EBAY! I think it cost in total about forty quid ish. I will try to add the link directly to it later. When I clean the bike this weekend, I will take a better pic so you can make your mind up on it.

Aracanth, I just went from the 170 to the 180 myself. I have a ''94 and have read in the forum the some member’s tires rub the guard. As I was mounting the rear wheel, I noticed the chain guard ears could be bent a little, as you have mentioned, if there was any rubbing. I don''t feel much difference in the low speed handling but the bike feels much more stable when smoking the soles off of my footwear. I also noticed that the bigger tire still holds the road in the rain. A 180 is only 5mm bigger per side than a 170 so the ears would not have to be bend to far.

Hi,
Absolutely, I havent noticed any difference, and I have used 180''s for 2 years, but it was more the look of the chain guard that I preferred. I didnt like the plastic one, the space increase was just a nice bonus!
