better mpg with 17T front sprocket??

gearhead -> better mpg with 17T front sprocket?? (6/18/2008 10:41:23 PM)

I have a 520 conversion (15/43) fitted on my 954 and have been averaging 43-46mpg. Its doing almost exactly 6000rpm at 80mph. I would like to go to a 17T front sprocket which would lower my rpm''s by almost 12%. Anyone tried this? Will it fit?? Will it make the bike lose too much punch??

take off in 2nd or 3rd, thats what it will be like.

I don''t think it will be that drastic. For example, 1st gear/15T @10mph is 1422rpm instead of 1612.

good question, im interested to see if anyone has an answer from experience

it wikll be a pig with a 17t front.  Its like removing 3 from the back.  I think playfulgod is right.

it will suck the life right out of why you bought a sportbike I bet on ya that.

And my bike idles at 1300-1400 lol

Sounds like the engine would have to work harder to get going, which in turn would suck more gas.....stay low on rpms like shift no higher than 5k rpms and when traveling like 40 shift into 6th.....

I guess I just don''t see this as sucking the life out of this rocket. Maybe I''m not as much of a speed demon as some of you guys. I never have enough road to open this thing up completely in first gear, maybe the steep gears would allow that.  At any rate, only a $25 experiment so worth a shot.
1400rpm, 1st gear
Stock gearing 9mph
+1 gearing 10mph
-1 gearing 10mph

4000 rpm, 1st gear
stock gearing 26mph
+1 gearing 28mph
-1 gearing 25mph

4000 rpm 2nd gear
stock gearing 37mph
+1 gearing 39 mph
-1 gearing 35 mph

umm you just dont change out the front sprocket with out a new chain n rear sprocket with it too. And the steep gears will kill the bottom end which is bad enough stock. And @6000rpm you barely even touched the power band.

Give it a try, but it could become more costly in the long run...  First. it WILL take off like an electric wheelechair. second, it will be alot harder on the engine and especially the clutch. Have you priced a clutch lately?  Did you think that the rpm could be so low that you could be lugging your motor, this causes more stress on internal components, not to mention the constant shifting. These bikes are ment to run within a certain rpm when cruising, this keeps oil pressure up and heat down.  And why would you need more than 43-46 mpg?  This is a sport bike... You want miles per gallon- get a honda 90.     imo...

hahahaha! not tryin to be an asshole but who really worries that much about gas mileage on a sportbike? damn gas prices must be bad.

1. Fill up the Mazda 6?
2. Fill up the Chevy Caprice?
3. Fill up the 954??

I CHOSE NUMBER THREE WITHOUT NO THOUGHT!!!!

Im right there with you. If im going out riding i plan on spending $40 in gas at least. and if its going to cost me more because im ripping on it every chance i get, i dont think twice, i just do it and pay for it. You work a shitty job to make money so that you can spend money doing something that you enjoy. just enjoy the ride, regardless of how much weight your wallet is losing.

NastyNINA54 -> RE: better mpg with 17T front sprocket?? (6/21/2008 1:07:01 PM)

it comes down to the saying " U GOTTA PAY TO PLAY"... and thats y i live pacheck to paycheck. cant stop playin with the 54 and those damn booty shakers.
