Polishing Rims this weekend

Wildcard -> Polishing Rims this weekend (6/21/2008 3:07:36 PM)

Well, I started polishing the rear rim today.  I left the tires on the bike though.  I just took some extra time to cover the rubber with some duct tape to protect it.  I''ll post some pics later.  I probably won''t start the actuall polishing process till next weekend, but the alluminum color should go well with my 54''s gun metal/black colo scheme.

Well here''s the prep and you can see the finished product at the end.  I didn''t get to polishing them this weekend, just got em stripped and such.  They look pretty good for not being polished though.  Next weekend the fun will continue.

Looks great with your color scheme. BTW- that is the cleanest sprocket I have seen in a long time. Do you even ride your bike [:D]

what did u use to strip it cause i used aircraft stripper on my heelguards n it didnt do anyhting

Thanks.  I do ride her almost every day, that''s why I had to hold of on the polishing, gota ride her to work tommorow.  I just cleaned the sprocket not too long ago.

I use Klean-Strip KS-3 Stripper.  It''s supposed to work in 15 minutes.  The Aircraft cleaner should work also, but my heel guards don''t have paint, do yours?  If they don''t have paint I would just start sanding with a 400-600 grain and work my way up to the 2000 gr.  That would polih her up.  I''m not sure if it has a clear coat or not, but if it did the AC stripper should have worked.

I use simple green to clean the bike with minus the lenses.  I only clean the outside of the chain as I just lubed it.  I use soap and water on the days I can detail it.

will have to try that, do you dilute your simple green? or is it "weak" enough to use straight? just dont want to eat through gaskets and such.

wildcard do you mind giving a quick step by step on how to polish the rims? Do you simply strip the rims and then polish them with? fine sandpaper?

I did my rims the same way. All i did was spray the paint stripper on. Waited and wiped it off. Then used mothers polish to polish them. The aluminum is shiny under the paint. Mother''s did a good job on mine.
