Wow, that a weird one, I suspect your have a possible short happening or a starter button that maybe just full of crud. That part is easy enough to check as the you can access to it by taking the screws out and separating the switch block. Gunk may not be obvious, but you can get some good switch cleaner from a lot of places, even the old WD40 can be used as a last resort (especially if its a combination of crud & moisture) & spraying around the switch & contacts. If that does not work, then maybe the starter relay is faulty (left side cover). Since you say you have some success with button, then a build up of crap seems to be the likely suspect.
