Is your kickstand down?
Your bike should start in neutral with the kickstand down, or in gear with the clutch pulled in.  If there is any deviation from this I would check the switch for the kickstand because thats probably the culprit.

Your bike wont start in gear with the kickstand down. Hope it is as simple as that, which I bet it is.

I''m sorry, did he answer the question?

The bike is designed to not to start in first gear, if the Stand is down. Is the stand down? If it is down, then this is by design and nothing is wrong.

Matter of fact, to prove the point further, after starting, putting the bike into gear with the stand down, should, by design kill the motor.

Yeah, so why don''t you make sure that the switch is working properly and not giving you a false-positive. Since the switch is DESIGNED to produce the kind of results you are having when the kickstand is DOWN, maybe if it is faulty it is causing your problem. sheesh.

Try downloading the service manual (links in General Tech) Section 16 gives you a whole troubleshooting section for the ignition system.

Ok i looked up the ignition system in the service manual, i took apart the kickstand switch and the bike still didnt start in gear...? Could this be a transmission problem?

I would think it would have to be an electrical problem. There would have to be a safety on the kickstand and transmission, and the one coming from the transmission would have to go to the neutral light as well...
