I am pleased at 45K miles !!!

rrrobert -> I am pleased at 45K miles !!! (6/25/2008 1:42:25 PM)

Greetings all. I am an all-season rider. My 2002 954RR is now only starting on it''s third set of tires, still has the third chain on and I have only done the front and rear brakes once. It has never been down and I haven''t either in 24 years of riding with the exception of one hit and run driver. Got me good..... [:@]  I ride in rain, snow and sun. And yes, never down. The bike has such a good center of balance - I have been able to do that with the benefit of Honda''s all my life. 1988 CBR600F1, 1992 CBR600F2, 1993 CBR600F3, 1996 CBR900RR, 1998 CBR900RR, 2000 CBR929RR, 2002 CBR954RR....

Just put in a new battery and for some reason of it not holding a charge. Found out after the new battery that if the bike just sat for 2 days with no riding it would totally discharge a battery. I used to get a clicking before the start but now just the clicking and no start. I will begin the process of cleaning around the starter relay and work my way forward to the balance switch and any other electrical issues. Maybe the solenoid is what is killing the battery (and now the start).

Any suggestions are appreciated. [;)]

sounds like you got a bum battery. have it checked before you start tearing into things. I say this because the only reason you would lose charge when not riding is if the battery is bum or if something in your system is constantly pulling juice, which i doubt and that would kill the battery probably over night. Also make sure that your positive terminal on your battery is covered well with the rubber piece. I had a problem once with the positive terminal on my bike arching to the frame and draining the battery, covered it with electrical tape and all was well after that.

Is it not charging while riding? You can always take the battery to places like autozone, advanced auto, or oreillys and they can put it on the machine and tell you if the battery has a dead cell. If your battery is good and your relay is clicking then I would start looking into the regulator rectifier or stator. With a little bit more information such as "it has no problem charging while riding" or "bike eventually dies after riding for awhile" would help alot. 1st quote would be a battery issue, 2nd quote would be a charging system component such as regulator or stator. Hell you could just have a lose connection at the starter. Hope this helps and its not alot of blah blah blah.

How do you ride this bike in snow???  I did in my old (heavier, slower) 600, but not on the 954.  Maybe, just MAYBE, I''ll learn to control the throttle well enough to ride in snow, but right now I struggle even with rain...  Something about slowing down doesn''t really make sense to me...

Welcome to the forum.  Sounds like some good advice given already.  ......SNOW ?  Yeah, I used to do that a little, just to be sadistic.  But only on my FZR, and I made sure it was a good blizzard, icy, nasty, super cold, and I went 85mph.  Mostly to test my new "windproof " jacket and gloves.  They worked.  My head and feet were pretty friggen cold though.

Snow... you got me confused at 45,000 miles on this bike with only the 3rd set of tires.. WTF!! Are you using a solid core tire? I''m lucky to get through a season of street riding on a set of tires..
