So guys...and gals, I''''ve had my 08 Graffiti since the end of April and have had a blast riding again. So I rode up to NYC from Philly area to see my girl and on my way home early in the morning almost wrecked pretty hard. I was coming across a bridge out of NY and was switching lanes to go around a car at about 80 or so. As I was switching lanes I hit a huge bump in the road (like a speed bump on the highway) and when I landed from the "jump", started to tank slap! Well when I was 17, I came down from a wheelie on my first bike and started tank slapping, so natural reaction was to hit the brakes (kind of how the manuel says!) and immediately ate it at like 70. Thank god I had a jacket on that day. So anyway this time was much much worse and when I came down and it started to tank slap, I cracked the gas....the front straightened right up and after my nerves calmed down I was fine. So I wanted to tell you this story in case a similar situation happens to any fellow riders, I would hate to see someone go down from something that could be corrected. Ride safe guys.

way to think on your toes man, just be careful out there

the saying goes, theres riders who have been down and there are riders that are going down... but dont mean you cant go down again! lol

i hate close calls. hope your wearing your gear all the time now, thats how i used to be, "wearing my jacket that day"

Congrats on not bitting the ground!! +1 on the HESD  I know its save my a$$ on many occasions(sp) now.

As for the questions guys: A tank-slapper (wild and rapid swings of the handlebars from hard-stop right to hard-stop left and back again) happens when harmonic feedback is generated following your front tire hitting an imperfection on the road surface such as a pot hole, speed bump, (setting the front tire down wrong from a wheelie)..etc

Somebody correct me if i''m wrong... I was under the impression that giving steadily increasing throttle will hopefully bring you out of a tank slapper. NOT hitting your front brakes or wheeling the bike. Right? Wrong?

gun it out. not too much, but no braking is going to do any good. roll outt the slap and "square up your bars"

if your slappin daily change your style of riding, thats just dangerous man

Yeah man def stay off the brakes! When it happens bad it''s hard to say, "okay hit the gas" cause you wanna slow down as much as possible if you think your gonna go down but that''s why i laid it down the first time cause I hit the brakes. Like I said, I cracked the throttle and it straightened right up. And "Mercury" I agree with "skitz", if your tank slapping daily, somethings not right. I''m glad you can come out of em but something still isn''t right. And "crash", once again good explanation on tank slap. "vabeachrex" just imagine your bar ends "slapping" the "tank"...not fun. Thanks for the responses guys, I just wanted to let anyone know who hasn''t encountered it b4 what to do to correct it. Ride safe fellas....
