Hello All,

Another new guy here.

I have my eye on 1990 1000F with about 45,000 miles on it. The basic bike looks pretty good and appears to be very close to if not completely stock (except the seat). I have not ridden it yet and the lower and side fairings are off and that has me a little concerned. The owner has not been around every time I have stopped so I haven''t been able to ask any questions about it. Like I said the basic bike looks ok but what should I be looking for on this one i.e. things that would be a major concern for the mileage, known issues and not so obvious problems for this year? I have had mostly V twins and dirt bikes so I am little out of my element on this one. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I always ask about any maintenance history for any bike and length of ownership. If someone is very good about the care of their bike, quite often they have some documentation and know the issues off the top of their head. As for the 1000f the biggie would be the cam chain tensioner. If it''s not been done, count on it. At 45k there may be a need for clutch plates. Make sure the speedo works, plastic drive gear is known to die. All the regular used bike things need a hard look-see. Take a volt meter and check charging at idle and 3000rpm too. Top points for me.

+1 CB2CBR. The elctrical system can be a killer..........
Replace the cam chain AND the tensioner, if it hasn''t been done.
Check for "clicking" under braking from front end - probably steering stem bearings.
May also need chain and sprocket kit at that mileage - I replaced mine earlier than that.....
Check for fuel/oil leakage - well-maintained CBR1000F''s don''t leak at all.
Check and replace all fluids if it hasn''t been done recently.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the input, all of it is great stuff to know and will come in very handy!! I am hopefully going to ride it this weekend and find out a little more about it. It''s kinda funny because I wasn''t really in the market for another bike and when I saw this one it stuck in my head. Now I find myself thinking that even if it needs more work than I am expecting that''s ok because I like the looks of the bike so much. My wife may think I''ve lost my mind if I bring it home, but I suspect that she''s thought that for years and for many other reasons LOL!!! I''ll keep you posted.

Hi,
One last thing. On an older CBR like this one, make sure that when you press the "Start" button, that the engine turns over FAST. The starter clutch is a weak point on this age of bike, and needs major dismantling to repair. If it sounds OK on the starter then it probably is. It shouldnt sound like the starter is having ANY trouble turning the engine over. Mine started going at about 45k-ish, and lasted another 10k before finally visiting engine heaven:-)

The one I''''m looking at is in Waterford, the guy lives off of Andersonville Rd and the bike has been repainted bright blue like the Yamaha''''s. Can I Ask, are you chasing the one in Lake Orion? If not is it in decent shape and what kind of money? Not trying to step on your toes, but if your not looking at it I might be interested if the one I''''m chasing falls through. No worries either way, like I said in my earlier post I wasn''''t really looking for another bike in the first place so if I don''t get one I''''m not sweating it. If this one doesn''''t work out I would only really look at another one if it was a good deal.

What causes the starter clutch to go on these bikes ?  And why does it have to go to engine heaven.....?   Is there not a fix to replace the clutches in the starter?  My Cane has 53K (km) and you got me worried....[:@]

It''s the plates that wear inside the starter clutch, Gill.As far as I can remember, Kaska pulled his out without having to split the casings. He did a how to on it as well...........I think Ara just wanted a new engine ! he he

Nah, honestly if I could have gotten that Biatch of a thing out I would have! I have tried to get the starter clutch out of my benched engine, and it cannot be done without splitting the case. Maybe the older engines could be done that way, and I know the 600''s are OK, but you can get so far in, and no further. Bit of a mare really! But.....If the engine doesnt sound like its struggling to turn over, you are probably OK. It sounds like a struggling starter motor, best I can describe it.

I have a 91, so I gather not much has altered.  Being a newbie into bike mechanics, the Cane is a really good bike to start.  The manual is actually really helpful and whatever hole there is - can be filled with a How-To off this site.  My manual is now complimented with "how-to''s" stuck into the relevant section.

I bought my Cane second hand, at $3800 Australian (cheaper your way by the sounds), 33000 kms and new mufflers but not fitted.  Immediately I had new needle and seats, tyres and I replaced ALL fluid - fluid is cheap so just do it.

The one thing I did look for is smoke.  Rev it and if its burning oil....it requires some internal attention - if that happened at 33000, I would have bought a different bike.
