Hey everybody. I am having a problem with the speedometer/odometer on an ''01 F4i. Basically, they only rarely work; that is, the LCD displays on the dash function fine, but the speedo reads zero and the odo doesn''t count kilometres. I am 99% sure that the problem is in the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) based on the fact the when the speedo doesn''t function I get an FI warning light that seems to be related to the FI system recieving an error from the VSS. Now, I checked up in my service manual to check how to test the VSS to confirm that it is the problem and it looks like a huge pain in the butt! According to the manual, I have to pull the tank (and everything else involved in doing so) and the whole throttle body assembly to get at the stupid thing. So, I guess my question is does anyone know any tricks on how to get to the VSS so that I can avoid having to pull the top half of my bike off? If not how big of an undertaking is pulling all these parts? On a related note, the rare times when the speedo functions properly are always on hot days when the motor has had a chance to heat up beyond 100 degrees (e.g. in heavy traffic). How could heat affect whether the VSS works or not? Thanks for any help.

i am having the same problem. From what i could fine on the net you can trying cleaning the connections to the ECU as that can sometimes do it. You are right it is a huge pain in the ... to get to the sensor. W/ mine, we tested it and the sensor seems fine so i suspect a loose connections somewhere (it suggests that in the manul before a bad VSS) but i have been unable to remedy the problem as of yet. see this Link for more info if you find any tricks please let me know! this is really annoying!
