Does anyone know what the top speed for the 1988 Hurricane 1000 was?

top speed as per  cycle world for an 88 was 161mph, later years were a bit slower at 155mph.

The 1987 and 1988 had a real top speed (not at the speedo clock) at 258km/h (or 161mph for you who still measures the ancient way) for a good bike. Everything over 240km/h (or 150mph) must be considered as "normal".
If slower you probably have a restricted version and need to do some small work on the intake rubber.

My 93 is a California model. What kind of power robbing restrictions/emission controls are on my bike compared to a 49 state or international version. I have noticed a white plastic "restrictor" mounted in the top of my air box, above the filter right where the air leaves the main chamber and goes up to the carbs. Is this thing a CA only piece?

Any guidance on getting back this government stripped horsepower?

Just the important ones. Plus, Vizionary, who originally asked the question, is from the U.S. and presumably was looking for an answer in miles per hour.

Tallenuf - two things to look for on restrictors :
1 If you can remove the white plate, toss it out.
1 Check the inlet rubbers between carbs and head for a "restrictor ring" - grind them off.

In 1989 there was a test done in Germany and the final speed recorded was a whooping 174.09 mph.  This was conducted on the autobahn with an independant speed register.  Good old imperial.................

278.544 Kilos an hour - that''s quick for 19 years back - shows what a good bike it is/was.......also sounds more impressive than sad old Imperial -
Does anyone know why the US has delayed so long in going metric ?
One would think that "Imperial" wouldn''t be well-thought of, given the history .. he he

Shadow,  Did you pull all the emission stuff off your bike? Could you give a breakdown of what steps you took, including how you had to re-tune the bike to make it run correctly after getting all the power robbing junk off?

Sorry, no - it was removed by the previous owner. I can post pictures of what the tappet cover and hoses look like now, if it''ll help.I also can''t help on the tuning - mine has non-std exhausts and a Dynojet kit. I''m told though, by those who know, that rejetting won''t be neccessary if you "gut" the beast, as they are over-jetted ex factory.
Someone else did the emission "gut" on the Forum within the last 6 weeks or so - maybe do a search.....
