The Fuel Pressure Regulator is vaccuum operated off the intake. If the Diaphram inside the FPR cracks it will allow gas to flow through it and directly into the intake. I reciently had an experience with this that flooded the intake, cylinders, crankcase, and exhaust full of raw liquid gas (around 2 gallons).

So, I do not have a bike yet, but im am looking for an 01 - 03 model F4I. I
looked everywhere online and finally found one in Ft. Lauderdale florida. The
bike seems perfect for me. 2002 model, 3990 miles, adult driven, never
wrecked or even dropped. I flew down from Charlotte to pick the bike up and
after we exchanged money and title i packed up my stuff and went to jump on.

The bike was idling, but before i could drive off it died. i started it back up and
noticed that it would''nt idle. I asked the gentleman if he had ever had this
problem before and he said no suggesting that it might be cold still. He took it
around the block and when he came back it was smoking bad and would die as
soon as the throttle backed off. We thought it was old gas so we pumped out all
but about a quart and replaced it with 93 octane.

When we tried to start the
bike it would not turn over. Thinking the battery was dead because it had sat
so long we decided to buy a new battery and put it in. SAME THING. The bike
would''nt turn over. We thought MAYBE we got a bad battery so we hooked it up
to jumper cables and tried to start it again. After a number of attempts we got
the bike to turn over a couple of times. The gentleman''s wife came outside
yelling STOP STOP and to our shock we saw raw liquid gasoline shooting out of
the tailpipe. (not a little, but a stream). HOLY HELL, WTF!?!?!?

At this point i
got my money back and gave him the title. Upon further investigation we found
out that the fuel pressure regulator has broken internally allowing the fuel tank
to drain past the fuel rail through the regulator and into the intake. In the time
it took for us to go get the battery and come back it had filled up all the
cylinders, the crank case and the exhaust system full of gas. We clamped off
the lines leading to the fuel rail and drained what we could. We also took apart
the exhaust at the tailpipe and around 1 gallon of raw gasoline came rushing
out!!!!

We knew we needed to get the gas out of the cylinders and crankcase so
we let the bike sit overnight so the gas would seep past the rings. We then
turned the motor over to pump out what was left and we got around a half of a
gallon more out of the cylinders and header. I have a video of the gas shooting
out of the tail pipe and rushing out of the header when we disconnected the tail
pipe.

Wow thats a crazy story. That''s really nice of the previous owner to refund you though. Did you get an FPR and get her fixed up or what? I''m interested to know what happened??

a similar experience has made me very familiar with the FPR & fuel injection system on the F4i

The Gentleman changed out the FPR, Changed the oil, Replaced the spark plugs and it fired right up with no problems. It runs great now. He even took a video and sent it to me of it running and revving up perfectly. It just sucks its so far away, i really want that bike!!

Just looking for a quick bit of advice. I''''''''m getting the sputtering/popping sound and a little dip in my low rpm power. My girlfriend also mentioned that I smell more like gas fumes when I come home from a ride than before, but I''''''''m not sure how much of that is related to the humidity, length of ride, etc. I had this problem with the stock exhaust and I just installed a two brothers slip on and it made it worse.

Ok so here is my question and how my post relates to this thread

. Do you guys think I have a bad FPR or do you think I am just running lean and this is causing the spluttering.? or to put it another way do you think I need a new FPR or a power commander?

PS I don''''t have any problems starting the bike cold or warm that I have noticed so far.

It could possibly be the FPR. I just replaced mine cause it was doing the same thing and now it work perfect. Spent $60 bucks for a new one and only took about 20 min to fix.

Yeah $60 and 20 min isn''t bad at all. I''m going to borrow a power commander off a friend with the same setup and see if it makes a difference.
Actually I guess I''d rather it be the FPR, I wasn''t planning on spending $300 for PC at the moment.
