I had my 95 900 rr for a day and the guy I got it from said ride the fuel out and fill it. So I rode it down and accidentally let it run out on reserve. This was horrible because after re filling it was backfiring and had way less power. $600 later I find out the sedement at the bottom of the tank had gotten sucked into the fuel pump and the carbs which then needed to be cleaned and reamed and the pump burned up. My tip dont let it run out, it will be a bad day.

Yeah, I learnt that one years ago, only ever had two bikes with fuel pumps though (or was it three?) Anyway sorry you had to learn the hard way. Oh yeah, same story goes for cars...

Even if you run the bike out completely so it wont start I thought there was still some fuel in the bottom of the tank, not much but some? In any case if you consistently run it on reserve every once in awhile or run the tank completely dry you should be fine because then you arent getting a ton of sediment at once because you are continuously emptying it. That should not clog anything when doing it this way. Was your tank rusty on the inside at all?

Thanks to no fuel gauge, I''ve run mine out of gas a couple of times. It does make your bike difficult to re-start again after fueling up. But, my guess is you had rust in the tank. For that reason, I would suggest putting in a $4 fuel filter because I know the financial whipping the dealer well unleash on you if you don''t.
